BEACH
There’s so much to do in Thailand that even your well-planned and long Thai itinerary will seem too short while you try fitting in every bit of fun and all the attractions this nation has to offer.
So, what does one do? Well, read through this first cut of my two-part story on Thailand (click here for the second part of the series). It will help you to shift through the best of experiences and vistas. Stunning beaches, resplendent Buddhist temples and mountain trails you'll never wish to tread backwards to home, Thailand is a place you'll fall in love with.
This one is located right next to the Grand Palace, so you’ll get to see two places for the effort of reaching one and is one of the tourist place in Bangkok. Wat Phra Kaeo is where you'll find the beautiful Emerald Buddha. Visited by locals and tourists alike, the sacred rituals at the temple will serve up a genuine slice of Thai life for you. And if you don’t mind short walks, you'll also be able to see Wat Pho, The National Museum, the City Pillar and National Gallery; all located nearby. Now that’s five for the effort of one, right?
Remember the movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Well, this is the street where he came to buy supplies for his beach folks. Now you want to be there, don’t you? Fancy bars, street vendors, artisans, and restaurants aplenty; this is the place to dig into local Thai life and do it like a Thai does it! And if you’ve got time, visit Phra A-Thit Road for a bohemian street-prancing experience you'll never forget. This is one of the many things you can do in Thailand.
Sticking to our budgets, are we? Beware, for a round through this bargain weekend market may get you to go hungry through your last days in Thailand. Superb home decorations, unseen handicrafts, bargain apparels, and souvenirs people back home will love - the Chatuchak shopping experience will makes your wallet ring empty before you know it. Get the Nancy Chandler Map for the market if you want to get to the stuff you like faster.
Ok Alcazar, we’ve seen you, we've got the 40-Baht picture clicked with the lady boys, now what next? Want to go back to 15th century Siam with magnificent masked dances (Khon) choreographed to perfection? The Sala Charlermkrung Royal Theatre is the art-deco venue you'll need to get to. Most of these dances are based on the Ramayana but unlike any rendition of Ramayana you’ve ever seen before. It’s a grand and magnificent performance.
Flower lovers, botanists or just another traveller; for the love of colour, you’ve got to visit Pak Khlong Talat. A good time to visit this would be on the last day of your trip. You can actually carry these flowers back home to where ever you belong in special flower boxes. And after you’re done immersing yourself in floral fragrances and riotous colours, you can visit the nearby Thai China Town of Yaowarat for some more street shopping. Thereafter, cool off by the Chao Phraya River nearby and you'll be fresh as a daisy for a dash into Thai nightlife!
Somehow the canals of Bangkok always remind me of Sao Feng, the nasty pirate played by Chow Yun-Fat in the movie “The Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End”. Don’t worry, you won’t get robbed cruising the canals of Bangkok. But you might just find yourself in the Chow Phraya River again. All of these canals lead to it! I’d suggest taking a river taxi to Nonthaburi and charter your very own long-tail boat to Khlong Om to visit to Mon Artisans who sell sandstone sculptures.
I love beaches, and if you ever crave for one while on your trip to Thailand, head off to Hua Hin for a dip into azure blue waters, or for a game of golf right on the white sandy beach. Seen people enjoy horse-riding on the beach but never done it yourself? Hua Hin is the place to kick this wish off your bucket list.
Now wouldn’t you all want a breath of fresh air after all that fun? I got mine in Pai, a little pastoral town hidden in the northern mountains. Now this is the place with those mountain trails you wish will never end. And if you do plan to return back to civilization, there’s always whitewater rafting and mountain biking to pump up the adrenaline.
Get fitter, learn self-defense, learn secret kickboxing moves, take up the sport professionally, or just watch it for the pure love of kickboxing! Muay Thai Kick Boxing clubs, resorts, and training camps have come up on the beaches of Pattaya, Phuket, and Ko Pha-ngan. Soon, you’ll be able to catch up on a kickboxing match anywhere in Thailand!
Tired of regular drive-off sightseeing tours? Well, the beauty of Thailand is well soaked in only slowly, and at leisure. So call your nearest bike tour company, choose a route, get a bike, hop on, and get going! I went biking to a few the world heritage sites, like the ruins of Sukhothai Historical Park, and the remnants of Ayutthaya, once considered the most important trading port in Asia.
Loved these 10 picks? Well, I have 10 more to talk about in the second part of this two-part series right on the MakeMyTrip blog, so stay glued.
