It is no secret that the British love their tea. Well so do I! Since I am such a tea aficionado, I decided to go hunting for the five best places for afternoon tea in London.

Afternoon tea was introduced in the 19th Century by Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. Then it was common to have only two meals a day- breakfast and dinner, so when the Duchess began to complain of feeling weak late in the afternoon, she began having tea and snacks in the privacy of her bedroom. Later she began inviting friends to join her and soon this tradition of afternoon tea spread far and wide. Today, you needn’t be a Duchess or a Duke to enjoy afternoon tea. So come with me as I take you to five of the best places to enjoy relaxing afternoon tea in London.

The Ritz Hotel

One of London’s most popular hotels, the Ritz is an institution in itself and is synonymous with opulence and luxury. Afternoon tea at the Ritz is a celebration in itself and you are expected to “dress” for tea (please note that jeans and sports shoes are not allowed). Service is swift, so sit back and enjoy a wide selection of teas, finger sandwiches, smoked salmon, roast ham, scones and cakes.

City Cruise River Thames

This is the perfect option for tourists who want to combine afternoon tea with sightseeing. Hop aboard a boat with large windows and sail down popular London attractions such as the Tower Bridge, Westminster, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the House of Commons. The cruise boat has a large, open deck where you can stroll, take in the views, or click photographs. The tea menu comprises of a selection of sandwiches like Smoked Salmon and Chicken and Ham. Other than that you can also choose from an assortment of sweet treats like mini Eclairs, Fruit Tarts, Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam and delicious Macarons.

Dean Street Townhouse

Think Dean Street Townhouse and the first thing that comes to mind is the traditional British ambience complete with large armchairs, ornate chandeliers and wooden flooring. During summertime find yourself a comfortable spot on the terrace and take in the vibrant Soho neighbourhood. Afternoon tea here is a lavish affair; I’d recommend the cream tea if you’re feeling particularly indulgent. Enjoy a wide selection of carefully brewed loose leaf teas, fluffy scones studded with raisins, fish fingers and sandwiches.

Ting Restaurant, Shangri-La at The Shard

If you’re looking for posh afternoon tea, then head to Ting Restaurant in Shangri-La, at London’s iconic Shard. High tea takes on a new meaning when you’re seated at the 35th floor amidst some of London’s most spectacular views. Favourites on their tea menu include scones served with Cornish clothed cream and strawberry jam, Steamed Prawn Dumplings and the London Smoked Salmon Sandwich. Don’t forget to appease your sweet tooth with treats such as Chocolate Temptation Ganache Pastry, Passion fruit Cream and Macarons.

Bea’s of Bloomsbury

Tea here is a no-nonsense affair and unapologetically so! The crockery is quirky and there’s no vintage china in sight.  At Bea’s you can enjoy a wide range of teas, their most popular one being the Vanilla Black Tea. The food here will take you by surprise as well- traditional finger sandwiches are replaced by crusty French baguettes filled with an array of stuffing’s.  Look out for delicious confectionary such as Meringues, Cupcakes, Scones, Brownies and Marshmallows. You’ll need to put off your diet for another day!
