FESTIVALS & EVENTS
With Disney’s Minnie Mouse and Cinderella taking center stage as the latest designer muses this year, there’s only one question on everyone’s mind – what will be defining fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2013? Will the limelight be stolen by Mulberry, Burberry or the return of milliner Philip Treacy? Who’ll walk in wearing what? And whose maternity line will the Duchess of Cambridge, English royalty’s latest addition to the world of glamour, prefer? There’s only one place that these questions will find satisfactory answers – at the London Fashion Week from February 15-19. In the league of the Big Four fashion events of the year, it is one of glamour world’s most eagerly awaited dates.
It is also the time when the paparazzi and fashionistas across London go berserk as they watch their favourite designers and models walk the ramps. While representatives from fashion houses in Milan, Paris, New York, and elsewhere will do some very serious business over gourmet cheeses and flutes of champagne, models elsewhere under marquees in Somerset House in Central London will hold the audience in thrall with their feline walks. Desirable haute couture from some of the biggest names in the garment industry are here in all their fashionable glory – Zoe Jordon, Daks, Marques Almeida, Todd Lyn, Mulberry, Simone Rocha, Burberry Prorsum and a host of other established and new talent. Designers’ exhibits will be held alongside to display the latest collections here and in some stores across the city.
Since the LFW takes it upon itself to introduce new and promising young designers each year, it provides the dream launch to aspiring stylists. While this is a completely trade related event, it is unlikely that tourists will find or get tickets to any of the scheduled shows on the itinerary including the catwalks, which are restricted for the press, editors of fashion magazines and designers. However, the event like all good things does come to an end, culminating in the grand London Fashion Weekend, an exhibition of designer couture which is thronged by the rich and the famous including Hollywood stars. This is a retail exhibition and one is more likely to be able to get in although buying anything off the racks strictly depends on the depth of your pocket. This year’s fashion week promises to be especially spectacular coming as it does on the heels of such internationally watched events as the London Olympics 2012 and the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Queen Elizabeth.
During this time, this international fashion capital not just offers the glitzy and starry glamour of the fashion week but is an exceptionally great place to shop, eat, drink and get entertained. With thousands of people from across the globe flocking to the city during this week, London’s famous bars, restaurants and hotels bring out the best in them as their cater to an elusive clientele. Ditto for the city’s shopping destinations. Visit it for the stardust that is sure to get rubbed on you too! Plan your trip to London and choose from a number of flights, hotels and holidays.
