SURPRISE ME!
The famous cantilever bridge, connecting Kolkata to the smaller township of Howrah, across the Hooghly River, is one of the city’s most recognised symbols. If you haven’t seen it on postcards, you’ll probably recognise it from movies like Barfi and Yuva. Though the first British settlements of Kolkata sprung up in this locality, later it served as a point of departure for those travelling by rail. Today it is the terminating point of several trains from distant corners of the country. The congested area may look romantic on-screen, but in reality most tourists settle for hotels in Park Street or Esplanade, both of which aren’t far from Howrah Station.
