ADVENTURE
Adventure sports have reached an all new high on the ‘are you crazy?’ meter. Paragliding and wind surfing are for the tamed. Adventure loving junkies are pushing their limits for the ultimate adrenaline rush that will surely make the hair on the back of your neck stand.
Diving with sharks in Ningaloo in Western Australia or bungee jumping in to a volcano in Chile may not be your idea of fun, but there are plenty of folks lining up at popular destinations to experience their share of thrills.
However, before you decide to try your luck at ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies, heli-skiing in the Swiss Alps or any adventure sport for that matter, here are useful tips to consider:
Fun comes at a price and usually one that’s steep. Most adventure destinations are remote, which means that getting there may be an expensive proposition. Booking your tickets well in advance, not just a month or two but possibly six months before is likely to get you a relatively cheaper airfare.
Adventure can be unpredictable, so it’s important that you’re in safe hands. Do a thorough research on the tour operators before choosing the one that meets your needs. Look for safety certifications and licenses and if you can, connect with past customers for genuine feedback on their experiences. Stay away from cheaper, fly-by-night companies.
Adventure sports require strength of the body and mind. Work on both your physical and mental health well ahead of your trip. It takes grit and determination to put yourself through physical challenges and by being in great shape, you’re more likely to meet your goals and enjoy the rush!
As you should normally do for any trip, adventurous or not, sign up for travel insurance. It’s a premium worth paying for peace of mind! In addition to regular policies, the adventure company that you sign up with for an activity may also offer policies for your safety.
What to pack for an adventure trip isn’t as easy as throwing sunblock and shades in to your bag and taking off. Rain, snow, sleet or sun, you need to be well prepared for freak weather patterns. Pack efficiently versus trying to fit your entire closet in to your suitcase! Think beyond the basics and include extras like medication and any safety gear that you may need.
While you may have endlessly researched the adventure sport of your choice, always be prepared for the unexpected. You can just as easily get sunburnt in the mountains of Alaska as you can on the beaches of Thailand. There’s no hard and fast rule about what’ll happen when. Handle what comes your way in the right spirit!
