When planning a weekend getaway from Kolkata, one wouldn’t normally consider Asansol as the first option. But if you like exploring offbeat destinations, the city has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Located in the heart of the coal belt, the second largest city of West Bengal has the right mix of hills, greenery, lakes, temples and a thriving urban life to attract tourists.
Seek Blessings at Kalyaneshwari Temple: Situated on the banks of Barakar River and in close proximity to Maithon Dam, this famous temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Devotees come from far and near to seek blessings of the deity. Legend has it that human sacrifices were offered in this 500-year-old temple in the past. Childless couples especially come here to fulfill their wish to become parents.
Boating at Maithon Dam: 30 kms from Asansol, Maithon Dam is a great place for a day trip. Surrounded by hills and a reservoir which is 65 kms long, it has the most stunning sunset views. With boating facilities and kiosks selling a variety of snacks, it is a top draw as a tourist destination. Please note, photography is strictly prohibited in the Dam gate area.
Visit Churulia: The birth place of well-known Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Churulia, 17 kms from Asansol, is a great drive with paddy fields on either side. There is a museum built in the poet’s honour which has many of his works on display. Popularly known as the ‘rebel poet’, his birth anniversary on May 24 is marked with cultural programmes. People from far and near come here to be a part of this cultural extravaganza every year.
Trek Up to Joychandi Pahar: This lofty hill is an hour’s train ride from Asansol and is famous for rock climbing. It offers commanding views of the countryside and the surrounding hillocks. Satyajit Ray’s famous film Hirak Rajar Deshe was shot here.
Picnic at Nehru Park: Beautifully laid on the banks of Damodar River, Nehru Park is a popular picnic spot. With a musical fountain, waterways, manicured lawns and a restaurant, it attracts plenty of visitors. From the city centre, you can take an auto or a cycle-rickshaw to reach this beautiful spot.
