Think sandy white beaches that stretch out as far to the horizon and the ocean sparkling under the hue of the blazing setting sun. Australia is home to some of the best beaches in the world, making it a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the company of that special someone.
The Whitsundays, on the tropical coast of Queensland is a group of 74 islands that are in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. You can stay at one of the luxurious resorts on islands such as Hamilton Island or be decadent and hire a yacht so that you can enjoy the turquoise waters in complete luxury and privacy. The Hamilton island is the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with its own commercial airport and is very accessible as it has short direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns.
Further north of the Queensland coast is the popular city of Cairns, which is considered the gateway to the miraculous Great Barrier Reef. From here, you can find a secluded beach to relax on or take a boat trip out on the reef. Go snorkeling and discover hundreds of types of coral in all the colors of the rainbow, over 1500 species of tropical fish and even sea turtles and giant clams. If you are feeling more adventurous, why not try diving in the turquoise waters instead. This natural wonder of the world awaits you both beneath the ocean.
You could also take a private hot air balloon ride off Gold Coast and lose yourself in the beauty of nature. Enjoy breath-taking views of Mt. Tamborine & the Lamington National Park!
Regardless of which type of beach holiday you choose, the atmosphere is perfect for romance. Enjoy dinner overlooking the water, swim in the ocean or hold hands as you collect shells along the beach.
If you prefer spending time on dry land then why not escape to the mountains. In some of Australia’s most popular ranges, you will find cosy cottages, open fires and plenty of places to curl up together and just enjoy some time together amongst the verdant surrounds.
The Blue Mountains is a gorgeous region about two hours from Sydney; it is just perfect to visit at any time of year. In Autumn, you can find brilliant orange leaves crunching beneath your feet while Winter is made for open fires and warm blankets and in Summer, the altitude provides a refreshing change to the city heat. The area also has some great places to explore; hike to the Three Sisters or hunt for treasure in the many antique stores dotted around the countryside.
Near Melbourne is the Dandenong Ranges that is a favourite weekend escape for those who want to explore the sun-kissed parks or take a fairytale journey on Puffing Billy, the famous steam engine that chugs up the mountainside. Wander through the National Rhododendron Gardens that is covered in brilliant blooms of magenta and red or see the interesting sculptures hidden amongst the ferns at William Ricketts Sanctuary. In the evening, enjoy a romantic meal looking over the city lights at the SkyHigh restaurant.
For a lovely way to unwind together, why not spend some time amongst the vines, where you can explore old vineyards and enjoy delicious gourmet food. The oldest wine making region in Australia is the Barossa Valley, which is less than two hours from Adelaide. It is here that the famous Penfolds Grange Hermitage was blended and is still made today. Other famous brands in the region include Seppelts, Yalumba, Peter Lehmann and Henschke. You can also find some wonderful cheeses and exceptional pates at Maggie Beer’s farm.
If you are in Melbourne, head to the picturesque Yarra Valley for a quiet few days together. This beautiful wine region has spectacular scenery and also some great wildlife nearby at the Healesville Sanctuary. You can cuddle koalas and then enjoy some wine tasting. Stay at the luxurious Chateau Yering or a quiet bed & breakfast and enjoy fresh local produce, great wine and even visit some interesting art galleries. Some of the notable wines in the Yarra Valley include DeBortoli, Fergusson and Yering Station.
The Hunter Valley, just two hours north of Sydney, is another popular wine destination in Australia. Here, you can take cooking classes, enjoy a round of golf together or perhaps relax by having a couples’ massage in one of the decadent day spas in the region. Of course there are also some great wines to taste, including Rosemount, McWilliam’s and Wyndham Estate. If you both enjoy fine food then you won’t be disappointed in the Hunter Valley; you can find fresh honey, homemade chocolate and handcrafted cheeses. So why not indulge your loved one!
If you prefer the excitement of a big city, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on romance. What could be more romantic than holding hands with your loved one as you explore Sydney’s stunning harbour. Whether it is walking around the Sydney Opera House, having fish and chips at Watson’s Bay or exploring the cliffs of Bronte, everywhere you look, Sydney Harbour is just magical. Why not take your loved one for a cruise on the harbour, feel the sea air against your skin whilst dancing the night away. For something extra special, you can even get married again whilst climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge!
Whilst Melbourne doesn’t have an incredible harbour, it does have a unique charm of its own. One of the most romantic ways to see the city is to take an early morning hot-air balloon ride and watch the landscape unfold before you. As the sun comes up, hold hands as you see Port Philip Bay to one side and the Great Dividing Range to the other. Float over the Yarra River, see the emerald gardens below and even take a peek inside the MCG. For an unforfettabe romantic experience, take to the skies in a hot air balloon. A perfect way to end the ride is with a glass of chilled champagne over breakfast.
So whether you like the water, feel like flying or prefer to remain closer to the ground, there are plenty of romantic experiences waiting for you in Australia.
