Step away from the hustle-bustle of Kolkata and into the town of Bishnupur, famous for its terracotta temples and Balucheri sarees. This quiet hamlet takes around 2 hours from Kolkata via the Durgapur Expressway and is ideal for those looking for a short getaway.

1. Take a Temple Tour: The temple town of Bishnupur has many wonderful temples made of red terracotta. Intricately detailed facades add to the beauty of these temples, the most striking ones being Jor Bangla, Madan Mohan and Shyam Rai.

2. Visit Rasmanch: The oldest brick structure built in 1587, Rasmanch stands in the centre of the town. This unique pyramid- like structure is one-of-its-kind in the whole of West Bengal and is definitely a must-visit when in Bishnupur.

3. Try the Local Cuisine: When in Bishnupur one should definitely try the local cuisine. There are many shops near the main bus stand that sell the best Posto-r Bora (snacks made out of poppy seeds) and chicken and vegetable chops (patties made with chicken or vegetables).

4. Go Shopping: There are many who come to Bishnupur to buy the exquisite Baluchari sarees. Traditionally woven in looms, Baluchari sarees are known for their beautiful motifs.

5. Drive to Susunia Pahar: The quaint hill district of Susunia is a short drive from Bishnupur. Part of the Eastern Ghats, the place is known for its hot springs and natural beauty. The laidback charm of this hill station is increasingly drawing tourists. There are local Dokra craftsman who sell wonderful artifacts here.
