The city of Scindias, Gwalior is undoubtedly the cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh. Whether you’re travelling solo or with family, the city is ideal for a weekend getaway.
1. Gwalior Fort: Coined the ‘pearl amongst fortresses in India', this hilltop fort is home to six magnificent palaces, gardens, and Jain rock sculptures. Do attend the sound and light show (daily) at the amphitheatre.
2. Scindia Museum: Chandeliers weighing 3.5 tonnes, one of the largest hall carpets in Asia, and a mini silver train…these are just a few items found here. Click pictures of vintage cars used by the royal family.
3. Man Singh Palace: Also known as Chit Mandir (painted palace), the palace has outer walls decorated with coloured mosaic tiles of tigers, elephants and more.
4. Madhav National Park: Trekking, rappelling and valley crossing are just a few exciting activities to try here. You can also spot bird species such as Indian pond heron and kingfisher at the aritifical lake Chandpatha.
5. Saas-Bahu Temples: These intricately carved monuments are not dedicated to mother-in-law (saas) and daughter-in-law (bahu) but to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Teli Ka Mandir is another 8th century temple known for its architecture.
There is a magnificent Taj property (Usha Kiran Palace) that has an award-winning Jiva Spa, yoga, billiards and even cookery classes. This place is worth staying in, if not visiting! For getting around Gwalior, tempos and autos are fairly common.
