An ancient metropolis, Hampi is one of the most frequently visited places in India by history buffs. From palaces to market streets, Hampi is a fascinating place to visit and has the right mix of history, nature and culture to suit even the most discerning traveller. If you are looking for a weekend getaway from Bengaluru, this is the place to be!
1. Hampi Ruins: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi is known as the City of Ruins. And rightfully so! With ruins and giant boulders creating a magnificent natural backdrop, popular attractions here include the Muslim Sunni Masjid, Lotus Mahal, Stepped Tank, Watch Tower and the Zanana Enclosure.
2. Hampi Temples: Although the Virupaaksha Temple is the only active place of worship in Hampi, there are other notable temples worth visiting in the area. These are Badavai Linga, Achutaraya Temple, Hazara Rama Temple, Krishna Temple, Vittala Temple and the Chandramauleshwara Temple.
3. Hampi Utsav: If you’re a history enthusiast then do attend the Hampi Utsav, held annually between November 3rd and 5th. Travel back in time as the town comes alive with celebrations, classical music and dance performances.
4. Daroji Bear Sanctuary: The sanctuary is home to 120 Indian Sloth Bears. In addition, you will also find Wild Boars, Hyenas, Leopards, Porcupines, many different species of birds and over 20 species of butterflies here.
5. Coracle Boating: Another popular thing to do in Hampi is a coracle boat ride. Coracles are bowl shaped boats and riding on one along the Tungabhadra River is an experience in itself. These boats take you to Anagundi, which is believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman.
