Ouray is easily accessible, and is one of the premier ice climbing destinations in the world.

You may not find much sun in the region, but the faces of triumphant ice climbers shine bright here. The region has been blessed with a number of waterfalls that guarantee a gripping ice climbing experience when frozen. No sun in winters also ensures that ice around the place is heavy, solid and long-lasting. The place also offers some affordable resorts.

Best time to visit: December to February

Cost: Ice climbing is free. Resorts are within the range of 100 – 300 USD

3. Kandersteg, Switzerland

Famous for its mesmeric blue ice, in a setting that is nothing short of a visual delight, Kandesrsteg is an ice climber’s paradise. Climbing levels vary from mid-risk to high. Kandersteg also hosts an annual Ice festival that gathers enthusiasts from all over the world, a three-day affair that also offers workshops on climbing.

This one is one of the toughest and deadliest ice climbing experience in the world. While most wouldn’t consider taking up this 450 feet long climb, if you’re a hardcore enthusiast, you may want to visit.  During this massive climb, the climbers remain upside down for the most part of the trail and have to even cross a 100-feet-deep ice hole. The giant frozen falls of Helmcken make for the best pictures, though, if you are daring enough to do it.

Best time to visit: Extreme Canadian winters, from December to February

CostThe entire climb is a self-financed deal. From training to gears, climbers have to take care of their own costs. Pricing depends.

Safety Measures Before You Go for Your Ice Climbing Experience

Here are some important safety precautions you must follow before you go ice climbing:

#1 Belaying – Climbing without belaying is never advised. Belaying is the technique that keeps you from falling very far in case of a slip. Get in sync with your partner and clip the ropes properly with ice screws.

#2 Proper Gears – Carry extra gloves, wear layers and make sure your equipment is well working. There is no predicting nature, so always wear a helmet.

#3 Start early – You never know how long the climb may take. Always start early so it doesn’t get too dark while you’re still climbing.

#4 Be prepared – While ice climbing, always be prepared for natural disasters such as avalanches, falling rocks and falling ice. Be cautious and observant, and also carry a first-aid kit just in case.
