Bollywood and Janamashtami go back a long way. From “Yashomati maiyaa se bole nandlala”, to “Radha on the dance floor”, the trend of recreating the tales of Krishna continues. From the rituals of fasting, to the breaking of the Dahi handi, the chanting of devotional songs, to Krishna’s relationship with Radha, Bollywood has truly captured the essence of Janamashtami.

Here’ a look at the places Bollywood has taken us to over the years:

1.    Vadodara (Gujrat)

Epic song “Radha kaise na jale” from the 2001 blockbuster Lagaan was shot in a village in Gujarat. Featuring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, the song re-creates Krishna’s Rasa Lila. Sung by Udit Narayan and Asha Bhosle, this song continues to top the charts on Janamashtami even today.

2.    Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh)

Bollywood couldn’t have possibly missed Vrindavan, the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. The bond between Krishna and Radha is beautifully presented by director Yash Chopra in the song Mohe chedo na in the movie Lamhe. The playful relationship between Radha and Krishna is flawlessly portrayed by Sridevi and Anil Kapoor.

3.    Mumbai (Maharashtra)

Talking about Krishna and not mentioning makan ki chori (stealing butter) would be an incomplete narration of his childhood. This aspect is perfectly captured in the song Har taraf hai ye shor, aaya makan chor from the movie Vaastav. Picturised on Sanjay Dutt, the song portrays a group of young men forming a human pyramid to break a Dahi Handi (a pot of yogurt) hanging at a great height.

4.    Mathura (Uttar Pradesh)

The song Maiyya Yashoda, from Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Saath Saath Hai was shot in Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna. Featuring Karisma Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, among other actors, this song is a depiction of how Krishna teased Radha at the river bank.
