When on a road trip, you are so busy dueling on the roads for way, struggling to meet the day’s itinerary, and firefighting 10 other unplanned things en route, that having the privilege to spend the night in the lap of luxury is nothing sort of bliss.
We got our share in plenty at the Swosti Premium hotel in Bhubaneswar. Our gorgeous room overlooks the swimming pool, which we simply couldn’t wait to try out. All our tiredness disappeared after a refreshing dip. But that is not all. The property has so much to offer that your days in Bhubaneswar will easily be packed with activity. I am talking about everything from an in-house discotheque, three fine dining restaurants, a lively pub and spa and several other recreation opportunities that you will be spoiled for choice. So wish could have stayed longer than our two nights stay!
Our date with the Museum of Tribal Arts & Artefacts in Bhubaneswar sadly did not happen. Google Maps did not locate it correctly and after taking several wrong turns and asking around we did manage to reach it. Located near the ISKCON temple just off NH 5, the museum stands pretty welcoming all every day except Monday and Public Holidays. The Jagannath Yatra fell in the latter category and so we could not go beyond the gates. No amount of pleading could get us through the guard and so were able to only get a snapshot of the vibrant tribal art at the entrance. Those who do manage to get past the gates here can witness the tribal way of life complete with their dress, ornaments and weapons along with domestic and music instruments.
Being in Bhubaneswar or BBSR as it is popularly known among the locals, and not visiting the Udaygiri and Khandagiri Caves is like a sin. After all, these partly artificial and partly natural caves on the twin hills have come a long way in the 1st Century BC to the historical, archaeological and mythological importance they hold today. And here's another fun fact - The Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Asoka was shot amidst this magnificent setting.
Our interaction with our guide who had a dramatic way of narrating history told us that the people of Kalinga hid in these caves during the war with Asoka the Great back in 262 BC-261 BC. After that it got carved and decorated to form the residence quarters of the Jain monks. The Rani Gumpha, of the 18 caves of Udaygiri, is the most famous with its multi-storied structure and well thought out area to receive guests and hold entertainment performances. There is a section where if you speak loudly in front of a pillar, your voice would get a loud microphone effect. You can explore the place on your own - a guide isn't necessary.
The Khandagiri, right opposite, houses 15 caves that are believed to have been inhabited by the Pandavas for a whole year during their exile. Now a Digambara Jain Temple resides at the peak.
The day ended on a high for us after a visit to the Nandankanan Zoological Park. The massive zoo, spread over 400 hectares, is the first of its kind in India to be a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The effect was evident in the upkeep of the premises and the gorgeous and healthy marine, aviary, reptilian and land animals that are made to feel at home over there. The ticket of 20 rupees each was reasonably priced to get us entry in to the zoo area. We loved the walk through the Bird Section and got to spot one spectacular feathery friend after another. There was the Cinereous Vulture, of course, that gave me the creeps. The Aquarium too had really interesting varieties of fish on display.
As for the Jungle Safari, it would have been far more enjoyable had the weather been a little less humid. But overall, a good value for the Rs 50 ticket. We were lucky to spot a white tiger, an Asian lion; lionesses and a bear! Your hungry tummies can be satiated at the restaurant run by the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation at pretty reasonable price. Again, you can explore the length and breadth of this kid-friendly park without the assistance of a guide. There is a Toy Train ride, boating opportunity and cable car ride available for those interested.
Now back at the hotel, we are eager to dine in style at one of the in-house restaurants. Tomorrow brings a long journey for us to Kolkata about 442 kilometres away. Catch you there!
