FESTIVALS & EVENTS
If Asia had a food capital it would be Singapore! This small island nation is home to some of the most innovative and exciting food in the world, with a variety spanning not just Asian but world class flavours from around the globe. It is no surprise then that this bustling metropolis also hosts one of the largest food celebrations-Savour- scheduled to take place from April 11 to 14 this year at Singapore's F1 Paddock and Pit Building, 1 Republic Boulevard (next to Singapore Flyer).
Savour isn’t just about eating food though, it is for gourmet enthusiasts who want to learn, appreciate and try different varieties of food and cooking techniques. This festival of food attracts Michelin-star chefs from around the world and is every foodie’s ‘wonderland’.
The Gourmet Village is a great place to congregate, with over 25 leading chefs and 18 award winning restaurants serving up a veritable feast of delicacies in an alfresco environment. The year 2013 will see chefs who have over 10 Michelin stars between them and come from all over the world, including Peru and South Africa. Each one will prepare their signature dishes for tasting, so pick and choose what takes your fancy and have your very own food adventure. This is a new feature to Singapore’s biggest gourmet festival and is sure not one to disappoint. To add to the excitement, there will be “cook offs”, where the best chefs are pitted against each other, testing their skills and ability to work under pressure.
Master classes will cover a range of cuisines and cooking styles that could not get any different. These shall be conducted by two chefs who hail from different corners of the globe, Sweden and Hong Kong. In his Michelin-star restaurant Sjomagasinet in Sweden, Chef Gustav Tragardh creates modern and simple creations that fuse the flavours of Japan, Thailand and Sweden in to his own unique style. With two Michelin stars, Chef Alvin Leung’s restaurant Bo Innovation in Hong Kong is labeled “X-treme Chinese” and combines ancient recipes with modern techniques. Trained as an engineer, Leung brings precision and innovation to his award winning dishes, and his master class promises to be a surprising gastronomic experience.
If you like to get your hands dirty then head to the Gourmet Market where over 150 new gourmet products are on display for you to taste. Experts are on hand to conduct product demonstrations, with innovative ways to tantalise and amaze your taste buds. There are also some fun activities to take part in, including a Wine Theatre and Baking Arena. If your children are getting restless, take them to Kids’ Corner and introduce them to the joys of cooking.
From the South of France to the local streets of Singapore, there is something for every palate at this celebration of gastronomy. If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, there are a number of culinary geniuses to learn from, and perhaps create a masterpiece of your own.
