What delights could a small district capital in Rajasthan have to offer, you might wonder. Well, quite a few actually. The quaint historic town of Nagaur is one of the most beautiful Rajput establishments in the state. Bordering the Thar Desert, most of the cityscape is painted royal yellow with beautiful forts and temples adorning it. The city walls echo of stories from time immemorial, forts speak of tales of wars and valour and the Tarken Dargah here is the second most popular dargah (Islamic shrine) of Rajasthan after Ajmer’s dargah.

Lavishly decorated cattle, music and dance performances mark the festivities at the Nagaur Cattle Festival.

A lot awaits to be explored here, but first let us talk about the upcoming event in Rajasthan’s marble capital, the Nagaur Cattle Fair, the second largest of its kind in India. Camels, horses, sheep and other cattle are brought here for sale and traders from all of Rajasthan and neighbouring states look forward to this eight-day long event. The dates of the festival this year are from February 2nd to 10th.

With lavishly decorated cattle, music and dance performances, crazy races and other competitions, the spirit of festivity in Nagaur can be seen soaring through the event. The pleasant weather during February adds to the enjoyment.

Another major attraction at the festival is the famous Mirchi Bazaar. Towering piles of spicy red chilies are put on sale during the festival, making it a major attraction. Any fair in Rajasthan is incomplete without a display of its world famous handicrafts. At the Nagaur Cattle Fair, you can find bargains on beautiful arts and crafts made of wood, iron and leather. Other show stealers at the festival are activities like tug of war, camel races and cock fights. Puppet shows and jugglery acts are also popular and extremely entertaining. As dusk falls and the hustle of bidding and trading subsides, the soul embracing folk music by Jodhpuri singers takes over.

Club your trip to the enchanting 'blue city' of Jodhpur with the cattle festival.
