When someone says “Valentine’s Day”, the first thought that comes to most of us is celebrating the day with the person you are romantically involved with. You know what I mean: the usual run-of-the-mill candle-light dinner, sentimental Hallmark cards and the extravagant gift at the end of the day.

But how about trying a new way of celebrating this year? Something that goes beyond the clichés and makes this day special but not cheesy?

Here are 4 ways to break all stereotypes and have a unique Valentine’s Day, whether or not you’re in a relationship:

1. Plan a trip with your pet

If there’s someone who loves you to the moon and back, it’s your pet. How about changing up your Valentine’s Day plan and taking a trip with your pet? This year, take your pet for an outing, be it an indulgent grooming session or a getaway to a pet-friendly hotel, and make up for the all the times you haven’t been around because you were out with your partner! The joy in your furry friend’s eyes will make this Valentine’s Day memorable.

2. Go for a Weekend Getaway With Friends

Plan a weekend getaway with your friends this Valentine’s Day, take the time to celebrate each other’s company (and have some crazy fun that your partner doesn’t need to know about #wink).

3. Take a solo trip

Been in love with a place you always wanted to visit but never had the company or the opportunity to go? Well, the good news is that this Valentine’s you can finally have that “date” with your favorite place. Go out and pamper yourself - hit the spa, try different cuisines, try an adventure activity: the world’s your oyster. And the best part of a solo trip is that you will fall in love with a side of yourself you didn’t know existed!

4. Go home to your family

Ok, this might sound a little sentimental, but hear me out. If you are one of those who have been cancelling tickets to your hometown every month because of work (or just laziness), this Valentine’s Day weekend is the perfect time to go back home and spend some time with your family. Trust me, nothing can replace the heart-warming satisfaction you’ll get when you surprise your family over the weekend!

Inspired to change the way you have been celebrating Valentine’s Day? Wait no longer! Pack your bags and make this day truly special for all your loved ones (and not just your partner). Happy Valentine’s Day
