That’s right, you can swim with giant whale sharks! The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in Western Australia’s north-west coastal region. The majestic whale sharks gather at Ningaloo Reef every year between March and August, allowing tourists to snorkel with them. Too scared? Don’t worry you can spot them from a safe distance too. Sometimes they come so close to the shore that you can sight them with binoculars, or sometimes even with naked eyes from the viewpoints. You can also hop on a cruise to get a spectacular view of the whale sharks.

If you’re lucky enough, you can also spot turtles, tropical fish, manta rays, humpback whales and elusive white sharks.

2. Climb the Gloucester Tree

Wondering what’s so adventurous about climbing a tree? Well, climbing the Gloucester tree isn’t an ordinary experience! Imagine climbing a giant 58 meter high tree, spiralled with 153 spikes. Just the thought, and the jelly legs kick in, right?! The world’s second tallest fire-lookout tree is in Gloucester National Park in Western Australia, and travellers from across the world gather here to climb the tree and enjoy the most spectacular views of the Karri forest. If you’re a thrill-seeker, you cannot miss this!

Guess what? If you are able to reach the top, you will be awarded with a certificate.

Bluff Knoll: Bluff Knoll is the highest peak of the Stirling Range in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The local Aboriginal people call the mountain ‘Pualaar Miial’, which translates to – “great many-faced hill" or a place with "many eyes". As you climb the steep track, you will come across a number of bird species and reptiles, along with geological formations and wildflowers. The trek can be challenging, but hey, it’s worth it!

#MMTTip: It is a round trip of about 6 km, and should take you around 3 to 4 hours. Don’t forget to carry enough water, appropriate clothing and sunscreen!

Gorges in Karijini National Park: Feeling the adrenaline rush? Head to the Weano and Hancock Gorges in Karijini National Park. Start your hike by exploring Weano Gorge and the rugged beauty of Handrail pool, then follow the trail descending into Hancock Gorge. You can go as far as Kermit pool. Here, you can also spot wild animals like red kangaroos, wallaroos, echidnas, geckos, legless lizards and various species of birds and snakes.

#MMTTrivia: Most people describe the walk down into Hancock Gorge as – a journey to the centre of the earth!

4. Embark on a Tour of the Fremantle Prison

Relax! This is no longer a working prison. Built in 1855, it was an active prison till 1991 and now it’s a recognized heritage site. Hear the real life stories of some of the most dangerous prisoners including thieves, murderers, serial killers, bank robbers and escape artists, and take a look inside the solitary confinement cells. It will definitely give you jitters! Surprisingly, the prison was built by the convicts, and since then it has undergone many renovations. The cells initially had hammocks which were later replaced by proper beds. A few prisoners were given special privileges, they could paint and decorate their rooms!

Where’s the adventure in that? Hold on! Put on a hardhat, slip into overalls, and descend approx. 20 meters below the ground to explore the tunnels built by the prisoners. Explore the dry sections of the tunnels on foot, and board a boat to explore the submerged passageways. That’s not all! Explore the darker side of Fremantle Prison’s history with the Torchlight Tour. The walls echo with stories of loneliness and sufferings. Join the guides in the dark as they share true horrifying stories.
