Given the political history and some insidious conditioning by James Bond novels and movies, I wouldn’t be surprised if this question pops up in your head before planning a tour to Russia. Russia is in fact, a country known for its huge size, cold weather and some unfathomable discrepancies that are mostly cultural prejudices. The mystery around Russia for Indians mainly entails from its distinctive culture. So, busting some stereotypes about Russia and its people, here is the real deal.

Russia is a huge country, the largest in the world. Gauge its enormity by the fact that it has 9 times zones and over 160 ethnic groups! Consequently, Russia is home to a number of different cultures and one should be careful about which customs and people one is referring to and not confuse them with those of Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia, or Belarus! Russia is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places you would ever set your eyes upon. From expansive gardens with snow covered mountains at the distant borders to ornate monuments like Basil’s Catherdral and Bolshoi Theatre, you are in for a great deal of vibrant environs and a long and well-preserved history.

Also, note that people in Russia like to walk a lot. Though public transport is efficient and easily accessible, if a Russian friend suggests a short walk be prepared to walk a couple of miles. So, remember to pack a pair of comfortable shoes. Russians are also known to be very well-dressed people who are seldom spotted in informal clothing. Therefore, do carry your formals even if all you want to do is party in Minsk! Russians are helpful and friendly, though not like the over-zealous Italians. When approached with a query, they would readily help but language might be a serious concern. Therefore, be sure to pick up a dictionary and learn some Russian phrases. For starters, “Can you help me?” will be “Vy mozhete mne pomoch?” in Russian and “Do you speak English?” is “Vy gavarite pa angllyski?” The police in Russia reserve the right to enquire about you. But there’s nothing to worry about, all they would need to see are your travel documents, so you should carry them at all times. However, for safety reasons always show a photocopy of your passport and visa first rather than the originals.

Apart from cultural quirks, make a note of Russia’s unique geography. Owing to its proximity to the Arctic, day-time in Russia stretches for around 15 hours with the sun setting as late as 10 pm during summers! Getting back to safety, a very well-travelled colleague once exclaimed that a destination is just as safe as any other place in the world. If you are careless, you can end up in an unpleasant situation in any country and Russia is no exception. Petty crimes and fraud make the news now and then in Russia too, but if you are careful, have your documents handy, and some command over Russian language, there is nothing to worry about. Also, be careful on late night rides in the metro and do not go for drinks with strangers... I fear I am beginning to talk like your mother now...
