ADVENTURE
Now that we’ve busted solo travel myths and even told you about some cool apps you can use when travelling solo, it’s time you decided where to go. Choosing a destination for a solo trip can at times be more challenging than the trip itself! Worry not, for we handpicked five of the best destinations from around the world that are perfect for solo travel.
A world city in its own right, Sydney has an inexhaustible range of options for the solo traveller. Stroll by the Harbour and admire two of the city’s most iconic structures- the Sydney Opera House (don’t forget to catch a show while you’re there) and the Harbour Bridge. Spend a day at Sydney Aquarium and enjoy a glass bottom boat ride, or even shark reef snorkeling! If all that has worked up an appetite, then head to Quay for a delicious Australian seafood meal (which was also host to the Masterchef finals).
With its curving streets and friendly locals, San Francisco is a vibrant, upbeat city, a must for solo travellers. Walk the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, chat up the locals, ride a cable car and enjoy the city’s fabulous weather as you cycle down the winding lanes. Sample delicious seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf, shop for souvenirs or enjoy a rickshaw ride while you’re there. Don’t miss a ferry ride to Alcatraz Island, one of the world’s most notorious prisons. Make sure you book it at least a month in advance to avoid last minute disappointment.
The warmth and hospitality of Asia, set in a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, complete with glitzy skyscrapers- that’s Kuala Lumpur for you. Explore the wild jungles of Borneo, or admire the dizzying heights of the Petronas Twin Towers, there’s plenty to do here as a solo traveler. Shop to your hearts content at the Bukit Bintang, (Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping and entertainment district), enjoy delicious Malaysian street food, or gamble the night away at Genting Highlands, the choice is yours. Walking is the best way to explore this city, but another great way to experience the city is by hiring a car.
One of the world’s greatest cities, London is ideal for a solo trip. Hop onto a tour bus and admire the iconic structures of the city, right from the Big Ben and London Eye, to the Tower Bridge (perfect selfie spot!) and Westminster Abbey. Pose with your favourite celebrities at Madame Tussauds, cruise along the Thames, or just enjoy a leisurely stroll through Hyde Park, the list is endless. While you’re there don’t forget to savour the scrumptious Full English Breakfast, Fish and Chips and of course high tea.
Known for its gorgeous canals, quaint little cafes, rich culture and narrow cobblestoned alleys, Amsterdam is a solo travellers dream come true. Take a guided walking tour around the city (also a great way to meet fellow solo travellers), visit the Amsterdam Historical Museum, Anne Frank House, or just hire a bike and ride around the city. Don’t forget to enjoy some delicious Dutch cheese and Stroopwaffles (waffles with a caramel filling).
