Want To Go ?

So if you’re planning a visit to this city, which is brimming with unending joyful energies, head to these four places for some of the best seafood delicacies you wouldn’t want to miss in this lifetime.

Oh! Calcutta

It’s the one place for everything Bengali cuisine has to offer, but seafood lovers must come here especially for the daab chingri, which is Bangla for coconut prawn curry. Essentially, it is prawns simmered in coconut and love! And then, there is the gandharaj bhetki, or steamed fish seasoned with lemon—the perfect marriage of flavours.

Where: Elgin Road, South Kolkata, Kolkata

When: Monday–Friday: 12.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.; weekend buffets: 12.00 noon to 4.00 p.m.

Price: Approx. INR 1,800 for two; weekend buffet: INR 912 + taxes per person*

Lokaahar

It might take you a while to get your mind off the interiors of this place. Infused with Bengali culture, this little foodies’ haunt will find a way to stay in your memories for years to come. And we are not even talking about the intricate Bengal handwork on the walls, which would leave you mesmerised, or the grass table and chairs that add a homely feel to the place. The chittol machher muitha (boneless fish rolls in gravy) they serve here is what a true blue seafood lover will sail the seven seas for. And while you are here, don’t leave without trying out their mocha chingri, which is prawn cooked with banana flower. That’s a treat unlike any you may have yet tried. Take it from us.

Where: Jodhpur Park, South Kolkata, Kolkata (Landmark: adjacent to Blue Mug Café)

When: Monday through Sunday: 09.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.

Price: Approx. INR 600 for two*

6 Ballygunje Place

6 Ballygunje Place is an old bungalow converted into an eatery, which exudes the very essence of Kolkata. So prepare to be completely taken in by the ambience as much as you would be by the food and service accorded. Honestly, there is much on the menu that is going to make you keep coming back for more, but it would be their mourola machher piyaji (small fish fritters) and the pabda macher jhal (spicy fish curry), which will make you wonder how you might survive another meal without either of these henceforth.

Where: 31 A, DD Block, Salt Lake, Sector 1, Kolkata, West Bengal 700064

When: Monday through Sunday: 12.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.

Price: INR 1,000 for two*

Kasturi Restaurant

The Plain-Jane vibe of Kasturi might seem like a let-down but that’s only until the busy waiter puts before you a plate of bhetki paturi, steamed fish wrapped in banana leaf. Next up, sink your teeth into kochu pata diye chingri, prawns roasted in indigenous Bengal greens. Rush to the unpretentious Kasturi if you crave a bite of anything Bengali or even Dhakai. What’s more, it’s even light on your wallet!

Where: 11 A, Dover Lane, RB Avenue, Hindustan Road, Gariahat, South Kolkata

When: Monday to Sunday: 12.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. (Thursdays closed)

Price: INR 3,00 for two*
