Trivia

If you have the time and the intent, a free-style trip is possible with hotels and B&Bs for every budget. Road transport is very affordable too.

Siem Reap, Cambodia is home to the fabulous ruins of the Khmer civilisation, famed for the Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are majestic and the fact that the trees have sort of integrated themselves into the temple architecture over the years, makes them truly magnificent. The place is definitely worth a visit once in your life time. The question is, is it worth heading there with kids in tow. While the city isn't exactly toddler friendly, the answer is still yes.

The temples provide for a lot of space to run around and children of all ages would enjoy exploring the ruins. There is more to do than that, most hotels have a ‘Bali-esque’ vibe with lovely little gardens, swimming pools and delightful tropical juices. A perfect day would include heading out to the temples after an early breakfast, back to the hotel for an afternoon of napping and swimming to get through the heat and one round of temple hopping in the evening when it’s cooler.

Here are a few more things you could do to make your trip more enjoyable for your kids:

1. Tandem Bike with Kids

Siem Reap is a smallish place and the older part of town near the pub street is better navigated on a bike. So hire a bike for yourself and the kids and go for a tandem bike ride. It will be so much fun!

2. Buy Alibaba Pants

They are the most comfortable thing to wear in the heat. The kids can run around in them, feeling cool as sweat dries off them very quickly.

3. Explore Town on a Tuk Tuk

Our kids enjoyed the Tuk Tuk rides the most, even better than the AC car. There is something about the sound of the bike and the wind in your hair that makes it more fun than other transport.

4. Go for a Fish Spa

There are a number of fish spas in the pub street area. Having their feet tickled by fish is definitely very exciting for the kids.

5. Have Ice Cream at the Blue Pumpkin

Located just outside the pub street area, Blue Pumpkin is a kid’s delight. Multiple flavours of ice-cream and beds to lie around and eat in. Makes for a fun afternoon!

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Time to plan that fun trip to Cambodia now!
