FESTIVALS & EVENTS
It’s known as “Asia’s World City” and for a good reason too. Cosmopolitan Hong Kong, with its unique blend of traditional and contemporary style has become a favourite with couples, youngsters and families alike. Offering a gamut of experiences, entertainment, cuisines and world class shopping, it is the perfect holiday spot.
Art for Entertainment’s Sake!
The Arts Carnival is an annual event held every summer, providing kids and families a welcome diversion from mundane activities while adding zing to the holiday months in Hong Kong. The carnival offers something to everyone, from musical shows and dramas to puppetry, dance performances, acrobatics, magic shows and multimedia theatre shows. The performances are held at various venues across the city and enjoyed by thousands of people, both local as well as tourists. In fact if statistics are to be believed, there are as many as 400 different events enjoyed by as many as 200,000 people! What’s more, the performances are staged by local as well as international troupes from around the world.
A Potpourri of Performances
The Arts Carnival has several great performances and some are an instant hit with kids. Many of these performances have won international awards in various categories and are a must-watch for all youngsters. The opening performance itself is a universal hit – the world famous fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves –performed by the Estonian National Ballet. This much-loved tale is given a unique musical twist with riveting performances, spectacular costumes and stunning stage settings. Another excellent production is White, staged by the Catherine Wheels Theatre Company,UK. It tells the story of Cotton and Wrinkle and how their spotlessly clean white world eventually turns colourful, much to their delight. This performance, while enjoyed by older children and adults is especially meant for the younger lot and captivates their attention instantly. The carnival also showcases some unique musical performances such as the Sound of Bamboo Music by the Beijing Green Bamboo Orchestra from China, which is part of the carnival’s eco-friendly series. In the new generation series is an endearing dance performance called Touch conducted by Blue boy Entertainment from UK. There are also several story-telling, puppetry and other shows which will keep children occupied for hours.
