Want To Go ?

Both these countries were bigger than they are now. Both of them lie on the Eastern side of Europe. Both are simply magnificent, and huge tourist draws.

On the one hand you have the cosmopolitan appeal of Prague. Steeped in history, bursting at the seams with one exquisite showpiece after another – natural or man-made – Prague is deservingly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. On the other, you have one of the oldest cities in Europe with Zagreb. Toughened with times, yet retaining that fragile balance of cultural magnificence coupled with commercial energy, Zagreb doesn’t disappoint. Then you have the lands of Moravia in Czech Republic and Dubrovnik in Croatia – both beckoning you with their wondrous vistas.

Sometimes, it’s impossible to decide which to pick.

So, here’s how Czech Republic and Croatia measure up. We’ll let you decide which one’s the winner.

Czech Republic

Czech Republic

Prague

Very few who have been to Prague once wouldn’t profess the desire to visit again, and again. That is the charm that emanates from this culturally rich, historically profound city that spans 1100 years of Bohemian and Roman history. Its diverse culture stems from a grand profile during both the Gothic and Renaissance eras. Turning corners in Prague brings you face to face with several different ages of culture and architecture, spanning a thousand years of evolving art forms that have gone down in the history books as masterpieces of aesthetics. From the many cathedrals and castles strewn across its lands to sophisticated works such as the Charles Bridge, from modern art homesteads like the Giant Metronome to the reminiscences of Franz Kafka in his home and cemetery – Prague is a city that exudes a delicate fragility, tempered with the anvils of history.

Moravia

A worthier foil to Prague could not be found.

The easternmost province in the Czech Republic, Moravia is the diametric opposite of Prague in several ways. From its glistening vineyards to its Jewish Quarter telling tales of horrors in human history, from the museums of Brno to the fascinating architecture of Olomouc – there’s a reason why Moravia is a UNESCO-protected Heritage Site. Do take some time out to check out the Thaya River Valley, a quaint border town offering spectacular views of the horizon.

How to Get There

Prague is certainly a busy hub for international tourism, so you’d be well advised to book your ticket, if possible, a couple of months in advance. The usual suspects operate between India and Czech Republic and these include: Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Etihad Airways and British Airways. Croatia

Croatia - Zagreb

Dubrovnik

Looked at from a vantage point, Dubrovnik resembles a lego building – with orange-roofed houses jutting out in suitably chaotic rows overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Nicknamed ‘the Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik is certainly one of the most splendid cities to visit across the Mediterranean. Presenting a pleasing orange contrast to the clear blue skies overhead and the vast emerald ocean that lies beyond – Dubrovnik is a sightseer’s paradise. From cobblestone streets to gothic churches, royal palaces and the Old Town, resplendent with historical jewels – there’s just so much to visit here. If you can tear yourself away from the beautiful locales that offer picture-perfect moments, that is. Once you’re done sightseeing, make sure you find your feet to the beaches of Banje and Lapad, and the island of Lokrum.

Zagreb

Apart from being the capital of Croatia, Zagreb also happens to be the oldest and largest city in the country. Dating back till the 2nd century AD, Zagreb is stuffed with historical architecture and landmark sites that tell a rich tale of Croatian history. If you wish to course your way through the historical sector, get lost in the Upper Town which is filled to the brim with medieval towers, churches, forts and cobblestone paths leading through the relics that were once the cultural, academic and military seats of influence in the country.

How to Get There

Croatia may not have as many flights operating from India as, say, France but it is getting there. You shouldn’t have a problem booking a flight since Aeroflot, Swiss Airlines, Lufthansa and British Airways make regular trips there. Book in advance and do avail discounts while flying here. Both countries have their own strengths, their own idiosyncrasies. By way of costs, there’s not much to choose from, as is evident. I suppose it comes down to your own proclivities. What appeals to you more – the aesthetic beauty of Prague, like a wildflower in winter’s chill, or the grizzled textures of Zagreb, which has many a story to tell through its long history?

Where would you be booking your ticket this summer?
