As a child, every time we went to the market to buy fish, I would wonder how they were caught. While I loved eating fish, I desired experience real-time fishing when I grew up. So when I overheard a colleague talking about his fantastic deep sea fishing experience in Cochin, I knew I simply had to give it a shot. There is a warmth and old-world charm about Cochin that ensnares the quintessential traveller. The simplicity is striking, and I surely fell in love with this port town fondly called the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea.’ After checking into my comfortable hotel, I had a wholesome meal and went to bed early with excitement and anticipation about my deep sea fishing trip the next morning.

A Day Spent out in the Sea

The next morning, I was ferried to a lagoon where I met a handful of other fishing enthusiasts like myself. The guide briefed us on the equipment and how to go about scoring our first catch—although for novices like us, it was mostly a matter of luck. I spent four hours negotiating a catch with my rod, with no success. I didn’t mind it though, given the cool sea breeze and the vast expanse of the ocean all around. Finally, after slight tug-of-war, I managed my very first catch! A sense of accomplishment filled my being, and after getting a couple of dozen pictures clicked, I decided to return to my hotel, somewhat satisfied. Of course, the next time, I hope to do much better.
