Athens is often called the ‘city of ruins’ and it’s in these ruins that Athen’s fascinating past is mirrored. You can actually feel history oozing out from every nook and corner of this magnificent city which blends in nicely with the city’s modernity. An intriguing mix of cultures and architectures from different era, Athens is adorned with b reathtaking structures like the Acropolis and the Parthenon, which stand tall over this amazing city.
There are plenty of things to do and places to visit in Athens. Some are free, some are not. Here’s our list of five things to do without parting with your cash and each one of these will add to your Athens experience in a unique way.
1. Wander through the Plaka
Located in the shadow of the Acropolis, in the heart of Athens, Plaka is one of the oldest districts of Athens and has maintained its antique charm. With its cobbled streets and al fresco dining, Plaka makes for a truly delightful, Greek experience and is extremely popular with tourists and residents of the city alike. Enjoying a traditional Greek dinner in the Plaka, overlooking the Acropolis in the evening is one of the best experiences of this mesmerizing city.
2. Roam the Monastiraki Flea Market
Walk around this vibrant, bustling flea market for a unique shopping experience or just take in the electric atmosphere and interesting sights. From trinkets and antiques to old books and furniture; here you can find many good bargains.Monastiraki is also home to the ancient ruins of the Roman Agora and Hadrian’s library.
3. Hit the Beach
Visit the free beaches such as Kavouri and Vouliagmeni which are about 30 minutes outside of the city. Soak in the sun, relax in the tranquil waters or simply admire the beautiful stretches of the Attica coastline.
4. Explore the Museums
There are many museums in Athens, including several free ones. These include the popular Musical Instruments Museum which showcases antique instruments from 18th-20th centuries, and The War Museum featuring uniforms and weapons from ancient times till the present.
5. Tour the Panathenaic Stadium
Built originally in fourth century B.C., the Panathenaic Stadium was host to the first ever modern Olympic Games in 1896. Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient Greek stadium, the Panathenaic is one of the oldest stadiums in the world and the only stadium built entirely out of white marble. Take a night walk up Arditos Hill for a fantastic view of the track and stadium when it is brightly lit.
Of course, if you are really itching to spend money, there are many more things to do and see in Athens. Like touring the Acropolis is a must-do and can’t really be skipped when visiting Athens. The entrance fee is about € 12(Roughly Rs. 830) and definitely worth it.
Soak up the history and culture, be awed by its imposing structures, enjoy delicious Greek food or go on a shopping spree; Athens is a delightful city that has so much to offer and one trip there will leave you enchanted. Athens is, without a doubt, a must-visit destination.
