“The best things in life come for free”—This indeed is true about a lot of things, and places, including London! Though the city is known for being notoriously expensive and if you are travelling with a family of four, it can cost you more than a hundred pounds to experience some of the attractions it has to offer. However, here we are with a list of 10 free things to do in this city of pounds, to help you chalk out an itinerary that can help you get bang for your buck. All you need is ample time on hand. Go splurge!

1. Royal Festival Hall

Located on the South Bank, this establishment is at the forefront of the cultural scene of London and hence a must-visit for tourists. Major concerts are held here but if you happen to drop in on the weekend, the chances are high that you will be able to enjoy a free concert or two, attend a workshop, while staying connected all the while by availing free Wi-Fi!

2. The Scoop

the scoop

If you are a movie-lover daunted by the high ticket prices in London, check out this place. There are no ticket tariffs here and if you happen to travel to the city in summer, this is the place where there’s something or the other happening every evening—from movie screenings to plays and live music!

3. Grant Museum of Zoology

If you are a zoology buff (and even if you are not), this is another free establishment in London you should visit. There are curiosities you will enjoy seeing here like pickled moles, a huge penis bone that belonged to a walrus and even a bisected cat that was pregnant! If you are lucky, you will also get to enjoy movie screenings of monster or animal films that were forgotten and you will get treated to a complimentary glass of wine thereafter.

4. The British Museum

You can’t miss out this great establishment and the fact that it is free makes it all the more worthwhile. If history and ancient civilisations interest you, you will love checking out the various artefacts that this museum has in store from most of the ancient civilisations of the world.

5. Tate Modern

This is a relatively new establishment in London but in its short lifespan it has earned itself a place in the list of the best art galleries in the world. You will enjoy getting your fill of contemporary art here.

6. St. Bride’s Church

This is an absolute must-visit when you are in London. It dates back to the 7th century and is one of the oldest places of worship in the world. The present church was designed and built by Christopher Wren. The shape of this church’s steeple is said to have given inspiration for the creation of the world’s first tiered wedding cake.

7. The Bank of England Museum

A museum that is dedicated to the banking profession may seem dull but it is not. You will enjoy taking a look at vintage bank notes, antique furniture, art work and even letters of claims which survivors of the Titanic tragedy sent the Bank of England to replace the notes they lost.

8. British Library

If books mesmerize you, a visit to the British Library will be a fun outing. Not only is it free of cost, but you will be able to gaze adoringly at mammoth displays of literature including the original lyrics of Beatles and the Magna Carta. There’s free Wi-Fi on the premises, a cafe and also a rather well-stocked bookshop that will make your visit memorable.

9. BFI Mediatheque

This is the South Bank complex of the British Film Institute and it is a great place for movie aficionados. The Mediatheque is where you can get access to scores of television shows, documentaries and films—all for free. The complex also hosts a nice little exhibition space, a movie store that is pretty well-stocked and two great bars.

10. Gresham College

Want to listen to a free lecture? Well, head out to Gresham College then! Since way back in 1597, this college has been giving free lectures to anyone who is interested in topics that range from astronomy to law. Now isn’t that an interesting way to know more about the world?

As you can well see, London has many free things to do. You must consider the above things before you step foot in the city.
