Call it ‘Venice of the East’ or ‘City of Lakes and Palaces’, Udaipur abounds in beauty. Be it azure waters or lush hills, colourful people or vibrant festivities, or its well-preserved architectural heritage, Udaipur is any tourist’s delight. To savour the best of what this city has to offer, we recommend these fascinating places to visit in Udaipur that celebrate the city’s rich historical legacy set amidst its gorgeous natural expanse.
On the banks of Lake Pichola is the grand City Palace. This glistening granite and marble structure is a sight to behold, and its imposing façade and fortified expanse narrate many tales of the erstwhile maharajas that ruled here. The City Palace in Udaipur is the largest complex in Rajasthan with fascinating pavilions, huge terraces with hanging gardens, labyrinthine corridors, and as many as 11 palaces, each with an equally interesting history. Within this premise is also the Jagdish Temple, a splendid piece of architecture featuring two huge elephants at the entrance.
The Lake Garden Palace or Jag Mandir Palace was built on an island on Lake Pichola sometime in the 17th century. The yellow sandstone structure sparkles in all its palatial majesty as you approach it while enjoying a serene boat ride on the lake. Walk right in to savour the grand views it affords from every window. The palace has a stylish restaurant, cafe, spa and a bar — everything you need to spend a leisurely day here.

Udaipur has four beautiful lakes and Fateh Sagar ranks highest amongst them. Tourists from around the world flock here to revel in the gorgeous views of the Aravali Hills and the tranquil ambience of this artificial lake. First built in 1687, it spans over 2.4 kilometres in length and has hosted various music festivals and events. The largest island on the lake houses the Nehru Park, which has a beautiful garden, a small zoo and a boat-shaped restaurant. The second island is a public park with fountains, while the third houses Asia’s best solar observatory called the Udaipur Solar Observatory.
Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Park is better known as the Doodh Talai, and its main attraction is the musical garden where you can sit for hours at length without a care for the world and savour the myriad colours in the sky as the sun sets in the background. This rock garden also affords gorgeous views of Lake Pichola and the majestic City Palace. Sweeping shots of the historical Udaipur city can be grabbed from this high point, making it a popular spot for shutterbugs. The garden owes its name to being the first garden in Rajasthan to have a musical fountain with light and sound. Don’t miss the ropeway from here.
Wondering where you can head to witness the most gorgeous sunset of Udaipur — the answer is Sajjangarh Palace. Ensconced on a hilltop, a few kilometres from the main city, this fairy-tale castle may be in a dilapidated state, but is the best spot to spend a marvellous evening taking in sweeping views of the old city. No wonder then, that it enjoyed the status of being the Maharaja’s astronomical centre and monsoon palace in its heydays.

Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar opened the City Palace of Udaipur for the general public, allowing aficionados of vintage and classic cars to view the outstanding royal collection. In the former Mewar State Motor Garage, the collection displayed once belonged to the Maharanas of Mewar. The semi-circular garage still houses the original Shell petrol pump, and a Garden Hotel and Restaurant within its grounds. The Garden Restaurant is quite popular for its authentic vegetarian thali. The palace museum also features an impressive crystal collection.
It was Maharana Jai Singh, who in 1685, built this lake while constructing a dam on Gomti River. For years to come, Jaisamand Lake was the largest artificial lake in Asia. Descend the marble steps to take a boat ride in the dazzling water, and observe the beautiful summer palace of the queens of Udaipur in the backdrop, along with many other majestic architectural marvels. One of the seven islands of this lake is still inhabited by the tribe of Bhil Minas.
