Also known as the four abodes, Char Dham is a holy pilgrimage journey in India, with the holy sites located in the state of Uttarakhand. The pilgrimage consists of four revered Hindu shrines – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is believed that visiting these shrines will lead to a road to salvation and help washing away all the sins.
The Char Dham Yatra starts from Yamunotri, which is the source of the Yamuna river. The temple in Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna. Gangotri is the second shrine and is also the origin of the river Ganga, with a temple dedicated to goddess Ganga. Followed by this is Kedarnath, home to the famous Kedarnath temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is thronged with millions of devotees during the Char Dham Yatra. The final stop is Badrinath, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Each of these shrines have a unique significance, with pilgrims from all across the world visiting to attain the state of Nirvana and seek blessings of the almighty.
The Char Dham usually begins in the months of April-May and lasts until October-November, coinciding with the Hindu festival of Diwali.
