Want To Go ?

Best friend’s birthday, late-night party shenanigans and a whole lot of banter about the mundane—all of this was enough for and me and my bestie to realize that we both needed a vacation! Now, the question was where to go? For once, the answer was unanimous. Rajasthan! We worked out our schedule and decided to explore Udaipur and then continue towards other cities.

Known as the ‘City of Lakes’, this gorgeous destination had always peeked our interest. With the stay and tickets booked, we set off on our journey — I was coming in from Delhi and she from Mumbai. Scroll down to know what all we experienced in this vibrant city...

I took a night train from Delhi and arrived in Udaipur early morning. Then, I finally met my best friend at a local hostel. She arrived a day before me to soak in the local food scene.

udaipur-morning

A nice hot shower and many conversations later, we headed to a rooftop café for some breakfast and stunning bird’s eye views of Lake Pichola and the picturesque Udaipur skyline.

Rajasthani-folk-miniature

Our explorations hadn’t even started when we met a local artist right outside hostel. He specialised in Rajasthani folk miniature art and was sweet enough to show us his collection.

vintage

Our first stop was the Vintage and Classic Car Museum. Just look at these beauties!

best-part-of-the-trip

The best part? Everything was efficiently detailed and organized.

Ahar-Cenotaphs

Our next stop was Ahar Cenotaphs! The 19 chhatris here, built about 350 years ago, commemorated the 19 maharajas of Mewar.

stepwell

Oh! We also spent some time at a local stepwell.

Shilpgram

After walking all day in the scorching heat, we both decided to relax at the banks of Lake Badi and catch the beautiful sunset. Located on the outskirts of the city, on the way to the local artisan mart called Shilpgram, this lake attracts curious tourists who want to experience more than just the conventional attractions. Our auto-ride to get there was a bumpy one and turned out to be a little expensive too. Nonetheless, we were glad to have booked it, as the entire road leading to the lake was deserted, with no public transportation options available.

Fatehsagar-lake

We stopped at Fatehsagar Lake for a few moments too, before heading to the hostel.

Mandir

Cut to the next day, we went for a boat ride to Jag Mandir, located amidst the waters of Lake Pichola.

Explored the enchanting City Palace with a government-approved travel guide. Loads of history to absorb!

Just look at the intricate artwork on the walls! And oh, there’s me!

rajasthani-footwear

Before the day subsided, we explored the local markets for some traditional Rajasthani footwear and textiles.

This sweet and short trip to Udaipur was full of excitement, history, culture and colours. Just the first leg of the grand Rajasthan journey though! There was more to come. I would leave those stories for some other time. For now, just bask in the glory of this sweet ‘City of Lakes’.
