Three years ago, on the eve of my birthday, I decided to travel solo. Little did I know then that I’d actually book my air tickets without even realising how expensive this destination could be... for me, New Zealand happened in the spur of a moment.

But because I planned well in advance and got in touch with locals to help me find cheap accommodation, my holiday turned out to be quite economical. As I searched for hotels in New Zealand, I stumbled upon some websites for backpackers that offered great budget options. At first, backpacking was not exactly my idea of vacationing, considering it was my first overseas holiday. But I convinced myself that it was a good idea because it was saving me a whole lot of money. And believe you me, as a single girl travelling alone for the first time, I can vouch for the quality and safety of the following hostels and hotels in New Zealand:

Columbia Apartments – Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland has so many good staying options that it was difficult for me to pick one. But after talking to some of my friends, I finally zeroed down on Columbia Apartments.

I’d say go for it if you are looking for a centrally located property in Auckland. Its proximity to SkyTower, Viaduct Waterfront, City Centre and Link Bus Stop helped me save the local travel cost as well. My apartment included a queen-size bed, work desk, cupboard and fully equipped kitchenette (on shareable basis).

Base Backpacker Hostel - Bay of Islands, New Zealand

From private units to shared rooms, Base Backpacker Hostel is a hub of global travellers. Located in the central town, the hostel is just a short walk from the main beach. It has a swimming pool amidst the palm tree courtyard along with a poolside bar.

If you like meeting people from different cultures, this should definitely be your pick from the many hostels in Bay of Islands. You can listen to travel stories of people or party all night with them; it’s one of those experiences you would always cherish in your life! Depending on how long your stay is, you can choose from the different discounted packages available on their website.

YHA Rolleston House - Christchurch, New Zealand

I must admit that the hygiene maintained by YHA Rolleston staff is impeccable. A tidy room with a neat bedspread is all you need after a long day of sightseeing in Christchurch. Boasting of a well-equipped modern kitchenette and dining area, you can cook and eat anytime during the stay here.

Close to popular attractions like Canterbury Museum, the Botanical Gardens and Hagley Park, this was a perfect place to stay as I ended up paying less for the local travelling cost.

YHA Lakefront – Queenstown, New Zealand

The adventure capital of New Zealand is always in action and so, I decided to book a hotel slightly away from the downtown area given the scenic beauty of Queenstown that must not be missed when you are here. Imagine sipping a cup of hot coffee and watching the sunset from your room balcony. (#blissful)

Owing to its beautiful location, the views from YHA Lakefront hostel are picture-perfect. Situated bang opposite Lake Wakatipu, you too can opt for a room with a lake view. Also, stay connected with the downtown area which is at a 10-minute walking distance from the property.
