Kenya may have a chequered reputation when it comes to stability and security, but everything is not that black and white about this beautiful country. And it would be a great loss to miss out on some magnificent experiences here, basing your travel decisions on just a few unreasonable bad reports. So, in this blog we will attempt to bust myths on safety in Kenya step by step.

First things first: Kenya is a safe place for tourists to visit. After all, thousands of animal lovers from across the world come to this land of national parks all through the year. However, they do and don’t do a few things to make sure that they stay safe from the usual scams and thefts that come as a part of any journey. Let’s see…

Kenya and Elections

During elections, Kenya may have a well-documented history of being a bit rough but tourists needn’t worry a bit. A considerable part of the nation's economy thrives on tourism and this is going to be the least of your worries. Also, the last elections were held in March 2013, so it should be a while before they come up again.

Navigating Nairobi

Like every large city of the world, western or eastern, Nairobi too has its shams and scams. But they are concentrated in just a few areas.  Our suggestion to you: be a part of a guided tour while discovering the city and don’t flash money or jewellery. Try not to travel alone on the streets during nighttime. And if you really have to, then ask your hotel to arrange for a cab. Keep the cab doors locked and the windows rolled up, and you'll get by Nairobi like the breeze.

Wild Wild Whiskers

Going on a safari in Kenya is one of the most thrilling experiences. The regions of Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park let you experience close encounters with the wild beats while being very safe. Just don’t hop out of your vans if you see animals around. Respect the distance! Instead carry cameras with good lenses for those amazing up-close shots.

The lodgings in national parks are very well-protected and there’s not a chance that wild animals will walk inside. Also, there’s absolutely no need for you to get out of your jungle resorts and venture out in the wild on your own. This is unsafe not only in Kenya but in any national park around the world. And why do it, when you have the best guides available all the time.

Beach Bummers

Kenya has some beautiful beaches, from the coastal town of Mombasa to the stunning Lamu Island. But there have been a few instances of thefts here. Keeping your valuables safely locked away will save the day for you. And how can we forget those pestering young boys who keep trying to sell you things. Well, all you can do is be polite, say a firm “No” and leave. It’s always good to have a few other tourists around if you come across good secluded places to sunbathe.

Kenya borders Somalia, so try not to sail up too far up north on a yacht.  Somalia is known for its pirates who unfortunately aren’t as jovial as the Pirates of the Caribbean.
