Mountains, forts, rock-cut churches and the famous ND Studios film set are just some of the reasons to visit the sleepy town of Karjat. Tucked away in the Western Ghats, this popular weekend holiday destination is a major draw for adventure seekers as well as the laid-back tourist.

Trekking: Karjat is a famous trekking destination in Maharashtra, with trails ranging from moderately difficult to extremely challenging. Some of the popular ones include Chanderi Fort Trek, Matheran Trek via Rambagh Point and Peth Fort Trek.

Adventure Sports: From rappelling and white water rafting in the Ulhas River, to hiking and parasailing; Karjat is popular for adventure sports. The recommended months for white water rafting are between July and September.

ND Studios: Spread over an area of 52 acres, ND Studios boasts of unbelievable sets such as a Red Fort replica, a quaint village in Europe and more. It is home to Hollywood production houses including Walt Disney and Fox Studios. In fact, any scenes from the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire and the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Devdas were also shot here.  

Kondana Caves: Excavated as early as the first century BC, Kondana Caves are a group of 16 caves with a stupa, chaitya (prayer hall), vihara (monastery) and sculptures. You can still see many sculptures and stupas with ancient Buddhist style carvings. To get to the caves, you can either trek or take a rickshaw from the Kondana Village.

Cascading Waterfalls in Bhivpuri: The small village of Bhivpuri, close to Karjat, is known for its cascading waterfalls. The Bhivpuri waterfalls is a great place for a picnic. The Vagni and Palasdari falls nearby are also popular among visitors.

While you are in Karjat, stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. The Saturday Market is the ideal place to shop and farmers from Nasik, Pune and Karjat get their fresh produce from the fields here.
