If taking a dip in a pool in winters is an act of bravery for most, how would you describe swimming in one that is surrounded by volcanoes and snow clad mountains at -5 degrees?

This might sound like a daredevil stunt to you but for adventurists travelling to Iceland, a surreal way to spend a cold winter's day is to swim in this geothermal pool called Myvatn Nature Baths.

Go Touristy or Go Offbeat

Iceland is a magical land of ice and fire. The bounty of geothermal energy, and glaciers dotting this volcanic island has blessed the country with numerous hot spring pools. While some of the small pools have free access, the larger ones are commercialized for tourists. These are vast, and well-maintained with amenities like sauna, spa, bars and restaurants. The most popular of these are the Blue Lagoon and Myvatn Nature Baths.

Blue Lagoon is closer to the airport at Keflavik as well as the capital Reykjavik, and is hence more popular, crowded, expensive, commercial and touristy. One has to book this tour well in advance. Last-minute plans generally don’t work out at the Lagoon.

Myvatn Nature Baths in the North of Iceland, on the other hand, is a 7-10 hour drive from the airport depending on the weather conditions. Owing to its picturesque location, this one feels more personal and is much more picturesque and serene.

Situated in the area of active volcanism, a visit to Myvatn Nature Baths will add another tourist spot to your list—the Krafla lava fields. The famous Hverfjall Crater is just a 5-minute drive from the baths. If you plan to drive around Iceland's scenic ring road, then Nature Baths is a good option and the Blue Lagoon can be easily skipped.

Moreover, the blue water at this geothermal pool is comparatively richer minerals, which can do wonders for one’s skin, and also help with respiratory issues.

The Experience and What to Expect

In winters, a dip in this warm pool—with spectacular snow peaks in sight—not only unkinks every muscle of the body, but also makes one forget every worry in the world. And if you are lucky enough, you might get to see the famous Northern Lights on a dark winter's day which will transform this unique experience into a lifetime memory.
