7. Warangal

The best part about the drive from Hyderabad to Warangal is that your sightseeing begins way before you reach your destination. Quite a few places of interest pop up along the way, such as the Kolanupaka Temple and the Bhongir Fort. Warangal used to be the ruling seat of the Kakatiya dynasty, so expect to find plenty of majestic forts and stunning temple architecture. Make sure you visit while you’re there. Accommodations are plenty and light on the pocket, so it’s makes for an economical weekend getaway.

6. Nagarjunakonda

It should take you little more than three hours to reach Nagarjunakonda from Hyderabad. Situated in the Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, this Buddhist heritage site is strewn with ancient stupas, monasteries, cemeteries, temples and universities dating back to antiquity. It is also said to be a site of the renowned Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice) ritual, performed by the Ikshvaku dynasty. Named after the famous scholar Nagarjuna, this ancient site is a perfect way to have a weekend tango with the past.

5. Bidar

At a point one of the prime jewels of the Deccan kingdoms, Bidar is now a storehouse of relics that tell stories of an illustrious past. Situated about 150 kilometres from Hyderabad, Bidar is a history buff’s delight.

4. Vijayawada

A city of ruins, Vijayawada has much to offer the temple enthusiast (Kanaka Durga and Mangalagiri temple), the Buddhist (Amravati, Ghantasala, Gudivada) and the general tourist (Rajiv Gandhi Park, Mogalarajapuram Caves, Victoria Museum ).  Make sure you buy toys made of Kondapalli wood as a keepsake for home.

If you’re craving some beach time this weekend, why not head to Guntur? Located 270 kilometres from Hyderabad, the ride to Guntur will be an effort, but well worth it once you’ve touched the sands of Suryalanka Beach. .
