SURPRISE ME!
The former capital of Bhutan, Punakha’s rich cultural heritage and its natural beauty is the ideal calling for all kinds of travel lovers. Experience the serenity of the hills, take a stroll in the local markets or just soak in the rich culture of this quaint city. There is just so much beauty in Punakha.
Often referred to as the 'Palace of Happiness', the Punakha Dzong is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. This insignia of Bhutan sits at the confluence of Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers and acts as the winter residence of the Chief Abbot of Bhutan. This Dzong is also the seat of all royal crowning functions. Plan a visit in the spring season for gorgeous views of the lilac-coloured jacaranda trees that grow around the Punakha Dzong.

The Punakha Drubchen is a colourful festival which plays host to dramatic re-creations of the 17th century battle of Bhutan with the Tibetan army. Local militia men dress up in traditional gear and re-enact the ancient battle scenes.
Winters are warm and summers are hot in Punakha and rice is grown as the main crop along the valleys of the two rivers, the Pho Chu and Mo Chu, in terraced farms running down the slopes.

Get in touch with your inner calm as you walk down the lush-green, rain-washed slopes. You might even chance upon some monks out for an evening walk!
Unlike the bustling towns of Thimpu and Paro, Punakha will give you the chance to just sit next to a flowing river and mediate. Head to this city to spend some time with nature and come back refreshed.
