Gilbert Hill

Mumbai is home to a fascinating rock formation, of which there are only two known parallels in the world. Known as Gilbert Hill, this basalt monolith column was made up of frozen molten lava 65 million years ago. Unknown to many, it has a height of about 200 feet and offers spectacular 360 degree views of Mumbai. Climb up this unique ancient structure for a peaceful retreat, away from all the buzz and activity of this populous city. There are also two temples located atop this hill, one dedicated to Gaondevi, and the other dedicated to Durgamata.

Hasnabad Dargah

Known as Mumbai’s very own Taj Mahal, the Hasnabad Dargah is a stunning structure of blue and white stone. It houses the tomb of Shah Hasan Ali Shah, the 1st Aga Khan, and is Mumbai’s most beautiful mausoleum. This architectural marvel is located in Mazagaon, one of the original seven islands of Mumbai. Set amidst dull warehouses and mechanic shops, Hasnabad Dargah is not popular among locals and tourists, but is sure to take your breath away with its exquisitely crafted minarets, magnificent blue domes, and beautiful arches.

Banganga Tank

Located in the Walkeshwar Temple Complex of Malabar Hill, the Banganga is an ancient water tank of mythological and religious significance. According to legend, this tank was created when Ram’s brother Lakshman shot an arrow into the ground for a tributary of the Ganges to flow through. Hence the name Banganga. This well-maintained tank has sweet water, despite being close to the sea. Not frequented by locals and tourists, it is now a popular haven for artists, poets and filmmakers.

Jogeshwari Caves

Known to be the largest cave temples in Mumbai and one of the earliest in India, Jogeshwari Caves are a must-not miss for lovers of history and architecture. Located in the Jogeshwari suburb of Mumbai, these caves are a classic example of Mahayana Buddhist architecture, constructed about 1500 years ago. Explore the various pillars and sculptures lined along its walls, especially the idols of Dattatreya, Hanuman, Ganesh, and figures of Shiva. In addition, there is also a lingam, a statue of goddess Jogeshwari and her foot imprints here. Though concealed by the congestion and slums around them, these caves are a must see for their beautiful carvings and endangered sculptural grandeur.

Flamingos in Mumbai? Yes we’re not kidding! From November to March, thousands of flamingos flock to the Sewri jetty in South Mumbai. These beautiful migratory birds come from Siberia in search of food at the mudflats and mangroves of Sewri. Perch yourself at a good spot in the distance and delight in the sight of these pink-feathered attractive birds, or take your binoculars and high zoom lens cameras along for some incredible views and pictures. In addition to the two varieties of flamingos, one can also spot the sandpiper, heron, black bellied tern, barn swallow and the greater spotted eagle here.

Chota Kashmir

Ever wished to experience the beauty and serenity of Kashmir in Mumbai? You can totally live that wish at Chota Kashmir or Mini Kashmir. Located in the Aarey Milk Colony of Goregaon East, this beautiful forest area offers a picturesque retreat away from the hustle-bustle of the city. It is named after its calm and scenic surroundings, lush greenery, exquisite flowers, and a gorgeous lake. Spend the day here picnicking with your loved ones, enjoy paddle boating or just relax in the calm of the surroundings. There is also a restaurant next to the lake offering great views and a few good food options. It holds the record for being the world’s largest stone dome without any supporting pillars, and replicates the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar, the oldest pagoda in the world. Head to this pagoda complex for a blissful experience and understanding of the practice of Vipassana. In addition to a massive meditation hall, it features a bookshop, library, art gallery, video room and food court, and offers 10-day meditation courses free of charge.
