Snow layered forests, reindeer footprints, shimmering lakes and the real Santa Claus. For those of you who have visited Finland must know that it is nothing short of a paradise. For those of you haven’t, you’re in for a surprise! If you’re wondering which season to pick for your travel, and what all to see, then we have made things simpler for you. Here’s your guide to the land of a thousand islands!

Start at the capital city, Helsinki

Consisting of around 330 islands, Helsinki—the vibrant capital—gets its mesmerising character from the sea, beautiful islands and its lush parks. A good way to familiarize yourself with the capital city would be to begin at the Market Square and try the traditional Finnish treats.

Next up, visit the famed Helsinki Cathedral. Admire its grand exterior including the colourful green domes, and stop at a small souvenir shop in the bell tower on your way out.

You can also opt for leisurely strolls in the national parks of Sipoonkorpi and Nuuksio before ending your Helsinki tour at the popular UNESCO World Heritage Site—the sea fortress of Suomenlinna.

Next Stop: Turku

Move toward the southwest coast of Finland and arrive at Turku—Finland’s former capital city, perched on the beautiful Aura River.

Visit Finland’s largest fortress, the Turku Castle that houses a historical museum and banqueting halls or head to the Turku Cathedral and into its small museum with medieval sculptures and religious paraphernalia transporting you back to the 1300s.

Add Lakeland Region to Your Itinerary

Being the home of 1,88,000 lakes in Finland, the Lakeland region brings you closer to Saimaa, the country’s largest lake and habitat of the Saimaa Ringed Seal. Take a steamboat trip to the Lakeland’s capital city Kuopio and visit the popular The Puijo tower or go for a cruise on Lake Päijänne—the second largest lake in Finland.

Visit Tampere and find yourself in the middle of two major lakes. Must-visits here include the Särkänniemi Amusement Park, Tampere Market Hall and the Pyynikki observation tower.

While here, you must explore the beautiful city of Savonlinna and visit its popular 15th-century Olavinlinna island castle, Kolovesi National Park and Linnansaari National Park.

End your Finland Sojourn with Lapland

If a winter wonderland has been on your bucket list, Lapland should be your next stop. Witness nature’s most spectacular show, Aurora Borealis, as you doze off in your glass igloo under the Northern Lights, spot reindeers around and go skiing at the Levi mountain resort.

Wish to pay Santa a visit? Head to his official residence, Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, right on the Arctic Circle. And, if not for anything else, fly here for the 3 million saunas, Finnish forests and beautiful lakeside cottages.

The heavenly country of Finland awaits with a box full of experiences. Make the most of it!
