Want To Go ?

When I think of Sri Lanka, the first thing that comes to mind are its stunning beaches. Nothing says holiday more than a long stretch of pristine, white sand looking over a sparkling blue sea. However, a beach holiday means different things to an adventure seeker than it does to a sunbather! Thankfully the small island of Sri Lanka has several different types of beach holidays to suit all kinds of tastes.

Hikkaduwa

One of the most popular beaches is Hikkaduwa, located on the southeast coast of the island. Holidays here are not just about what you can do shore side; this is where you go if you also enjoy the cafe lifestyle. Chill out at one of the many local cafes, sipping on ice-cold fruit smoothies in between sunbathing sessions or learning to surf in the gentle waves. A little further north you can find the small towns of Bentota and Kosgoda, famous for their turtle conservation and also home to some spectacular beaches.

Arugam Bay

If you prefer the idea of getting off the beaten track then head to Arugam Bay on the Indian Ocean. This relaxed surfing town has some of the best waves in Sri Lanka and is also a great place to try a delicious variety of fresh seafood. While this town is much quieter than many other seaside towns on the island, it still has its fair share of activities. Don’t miss taking a boat ride out to Pottuvil Lagoon and experience the amazing ecosystem of the mangroves, firsthand. With over 70 species of birds as well as crocodiles, water snakes, monkeys and even elephants, this is where the jungle meets the sea!

Negombo

Just north of Colombo, near the airport is the popular town of Negombo. Once a Dutch fort, this historic town is conveniently located close to the airport, making it a great place to start or end your holiday. The town is home to lovely churches; you can also experience visiting the local fish market in the morning or just pull up a chair by the seaside and unwind. If you like a bit of adventure, then why not rent a Jet Ski or surfboard and head out into the ocean for some fun!

Galle

At the south of the island is another popular fort town, Galle. Though the town itself doesn’t really have a beach, it has a charming European feel to it and is a good place to collect some provisions before heading to the southern beaches, which are becoming quite popular with travelers. Heading east from Galle you will find a succession of laid-back seaside villages including Unawatuna and Thalpe. In Thalpe you can hire a lovely villa and enjoy a relaxing but luxurious holiday. Unawatuna is a great town for a beach party, or even just to grab a moped and ride along the tranquil coastline until you find your own little piece of heaven.
