SURPRISE ME!
From the peaks of its teeming rainforests to the depths of its clear, azure waters, Malaysia will astound and delight you. You cannot help lose yourself in this haven of exotic wildlife and marine life. You will want to be a part of this dynamic melting pot of diverse people, cultures, and cuisines. What’s more, you will find yourself fascinated by its contrasts – a tireless amalgamation of the ancient and the modern, represented among other things by its skyscrapers and its stilted huts. Malaysia isn’t your regular tourist destination, at least not for those who care to look beyond the obvious. What makes Malaysia the ‘truly Asia’ experience besides its people, culture and traditions are water sports, adventure sports, a scintillating nightlife and an enviable list of places to shop from. Here’s telling you why Malaysia is the ultimate travel destination. Gear up!
Endowed with nature’s bounties, Malaysia is the ideal tropical destination whether you’re looking to get a healthy tan, bathe in the sea, lounge about on a deck chair or be more adventurous by trying snorkeling, scuba diving or sea walking. While the country has an exhausting number of beaches and islands you can visit, we’d recommend you definitely include at least some of the following in your trip.
Arguably Malaysia’s most popular tourist destination, Langkawi offers everything from sandy beaches to thick rainforests and thriving mangroves. Whether you’re taking the cable car ride to Gunung Mat Chinchang, walking on the sky bridge or watching fascinating cultural shows, this place will keep you busy and hooked.
Among the country’s most popular destinations for diving and snorkeling, you will find yourself lost in the beauty of its powdery white beaches on land and the teeming variety of aquatic life in the sea – jelly fish, baby sharks, and the ‘Nemo’ or clown fish. Jungle treks through its dense interiors are also popular.
Said to be among the most beautiful islands in the world, Tioman offers both natural beauty and ecological diversity. Dive in to explore its many reefs, visit a turtle farm or go visit a traditional village. The choice is yours!
Of course the best and most vibrant city in Malaysia is its capital, Kuala Lumpur. From the world famous Petronas Towers, to the Old Railway Station, this heaving metropolis is a melting pot of cultures. Its Chinese, Malay, and Indian population makes it a vibrant and diverse hub where you can explore museums, art galleries, watch traditional shows, go shopping in its malls and street markets and eat to your heart’s content. The city is also well known for its nightlife – a place where the party never stops.
The capital of Penang, the city is dominated by the Malay Chinese. Small enough to be explored on foot, it offers a number of attractions. Not to be missed is the heritage trail, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Kapitan Keling mosque as well as many Buddhist temples.
The second largest city in Malaysia and curiously enough, within walking distance of Singapore, it is steadily gaining popularity among tourists. Visit its amusement parks as well as the fascinating Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple, a Hindu temple with beautiful glass mosaics.
Shop Till You Drop!
Malaysia is one of the world’s best shopping destinations. Right from designer labels from around the world, to local crafts, clothes, spices, and electronic goods; you can shop for just about anything. The best time to shop is during the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival between June to September. A variety of duty free goods makes shopping here both exciting and inexpensive. Central Market, BBKLCC, Petaling Street and Sunway Pyramid are among the must-visits in KL in addition to street markets, night markets and antique shops.
Eat Your Heart Out
The famous Malay cuisine offers many gastronomical delights. Among the many things to die for are char kway teow, laksa, nasi lemak and nasi biryani, roti john and of course the satays.
Travel Tips:
Malaysia’s Tourist Police is at the service of travelers and will help you with most things from finding your way about to keeping you safe.
Wear loose, cotton clothes when in Malaysia. Women should ideally wear long sleeves and full length skirts or pants when visiting a mosque or a temple.
Follow etiquette which includes not pointing your foot at someone, using your right hand to eat or accept things, and removing your shoes before entering someone’s house or a place of worship.
