1. Travel back in time at Baku’s Old City

Baku

The historical core of Baku, Old City, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower. Take a walk through the maze-like cobbled streets dotted with a number of cafes and try traditional Azerbaijani dishes.

#MMTTravellerTip: Don’t forget to check out the amazing bazaars, craftsmen’s workshops and mosques.

2. Check out the UNESCO-listed rock carvings at Gobustan National Park

Gobustan

Located about 40 miles from the centre of Baku, Gobustan National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient carvings, mud volcanoes, and gas-stones in the region lure a number of tourists. You can explore more than 6,000 carvings dating back to about 20,000 years, depicting scenes of hunting, bullfights, ritual dances, and battles.

#MMTTravellerTip: You can also visit the mud volcanos to watch their bizarre gurgling.

3. Relax by the palm-fringed beaches

Bounded by the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan is blessed with a stunning landscape and a string of picture-perfect beaches. The most beautiful beaches include Bilgah Beach, Shikhov Beach, Mardakan Beach, and the Absheron Peninsula Beaches.

You can check out the cafes near the beaches or simply sit back and watch the sun dip into the ocean.

4. Explore the interesting museums in Baku

Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, is home to about 30 museums, covering everything from history and culture to miniature books and carpets.

Visit the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan having more than 2,000 exhibits and the Azerbaijan State Museum of Art to check out the paintings and sculptures from Azerbaijani, Russian, and European artists. Your museum tour would be incomplete if you don’t stop by the Baku Museum of Miniature Books, housing the three smallest books in the world, and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum flaunting a unique architectural design.

#MMTTravellerTip: You can also visit the Fire Temple of Baku nearby, which is a major tourist hot-spot.

5. Embrace the tea culture

The national drink, Tea, is an integral part of the authentic Azerbaijani experience. You can stop by the numerous teahouses and try piping hot tea in small pear-shaped Armudu glasses, served with jam made from local fruits. Sometimes thyme, mint or rose water is added to the tea for healthcare.

#MMTTravellerTip: Adding milk to the tea is very uncommon in Azerbaijan.

6. Spend some time by the beautiful Lake Göygöl

Situated at the foot of Mount Kapaz in the Göygöl National Park, Lake Göygöl was formed due to a massive earthquake that hit the area. Tucked at 4,921 feet, the lake offers unbelievable views of the surroundings and the entire area looks straight out of a postcard.

Due to the crystal-clear waters, one can spot the underwater life clearly, about 8 to 10 meters below the surface.

7. Take a trip to Sheki

sheki

Sheki is a former Silk Road city and for a town of its size, it has a lot to offer! You’ll fall in love with the cobbled streets, beautiful houses, stone buildings, and quaint cafes. Visit the Fortress of Sheki Khans, the erstwhile summer palace, and get enchanted by the stunning architecture.

Adventure lovers can trek to the Gelersen-Görersen fortress and history buffs can visit the ancient Church of Kish.
