SURPRISE ME!
Yes, the whole country has been gossiping about Mr. Modi, travelling around the world, raising eyebrows of the Indian aam aadmi (common people). But this post is not about the very well know former chaiwalla, the current Indian Prime Minister. This is a story about dreams, guts and plain hard word of a couple who have earned this title after visiting over 16 countries while supporting their travel dreams on just a small tea stall.
A tea seller for over forty years, Vijayan’s shop is tucked into a little corner of Kochi. On an average day, you will find Vijayan and his wife Mohana, standing at the head of their tea stall, pouring tea into little cups and serving customers. It is only when you strike up a friendly conversation, he gladly recounts his travel experiences and adventures.
What started with temple visits in and around Kerala, became a full-fledged travel dream very early in life for Vijayan. Life took its course and it was only after 1988 that Vijayan could start travelling again. And he has not stopped. The couple have travelled across India and over 16 countries like Austria, Britain, Egypt, France, UAE and more!
Wondering how they are making it happen? It is a patient combination of savings and taking loans. The couple take bank loans for their travels and with diligent saving, pay it off in the next three years and the cycle continues. Though it has not been easy for them to maintain this lifestyle. And as Vijayan turned 65, financial insecurities have crept in; making it difficult for them to get a loan. However, there is no stopping a passionate heart.
Mohana lights up with excitement as she recounts her favourite destination, Switzerland. Whereas Vijayan wants to return to the Nile in Egypt, when he gets the chance. Despite the financial burden, Vijayan refuses to travel alone. “I am happy only when she is around” he says smiling.
It is said, that if you truly want something with all your heart, the universe conspires to make it happen and this could not be truer in the case Vijayan and Mohana. Despite all the challenges they face, the couple are sure that they are going to keep travelling for as long as they live.
So, what is your excuse? Pack your bags and push off!
