A hidden gem, Kumbhalgarh in Rajasthan is the birth place of Maharana Pratap, the then warrior king of Mewar in the 1500s. This is also where the imposing the Kumbhalgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands tall. Built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, the fort is protected by the surrounding mountain peaks of the Aravali range. With seven gateways and a 36-kilomtre long wall surrounding the fort, there are 360 Hindu and Jain temples, palaces and halls within the fort. Looking out from atop the walls of Kumbhalgarh Fort, you can see the sand dunes of the Thar Desert in the distance. While in Kumbhalgarh, also visit the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary and embark on a safari to spot Asiatic lions that have been relocated here along with other wildlife like the wild boar, sloth bear, hyena and chinkara, to name a few.

Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary or Sasan Gir is an area of over 1400 square kilometres dedicated to the Asiatic lion. Regarded as one of Asia’s most protected regions, the topography is a mix of grasslands and dry deciduous forests with teak and fruit bearing trees including ber and jamun. While the lion is undoubtedly the biggest draw at Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, other species of wildlife that are inhabitants here are leopards, hyenas, antelopes, jackals and wild boars.
