1. Kumbhalgarh
 

A hidden gem, Kumbhalgarh in Rajasthan is the birth place of Maharana Pratap, the then warrior king of Mewar in the 1500s. This is also where the imposing the Kumbhalgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands tall. Built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, the fort is protected by the surrounding mountain peaks of the Aravali range. With seven gateways and a 36-kilomtre long wall surrounding the fort, there are 360 Hindu and Jain temples, palaces and halls within the fort. Looking out from atop the walls of Kumbhalgarh Fort, you can see the sand dunes of the Thar Desert in the distance. While in Kumbhalgarh, also visit the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary and embark on a safari to spot Asiatic lions that have been relocated here along with other wildlife like the wild boar, sloth bear, hyena and chinkara, to name a few.

2. Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary

Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary or Sasan Gir is an area of over 1400 square kilometres dedicated to the Asiatic lion. Regarded as one of Asia’s most protected regions, the topography is a mix of grasslands and dry deciduous forests with teak and fruit bearing trees including ber and jamun. While the lion is undoubtedly the biggest draw at Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, other species of wildlife that are inhabitants here are leopards, hyenas, antelopes, jackals and wild boars.

3. Udaipur

4. Mount Abu

5. Little Rann of Kutch

The saline wilderness of the Little Rann of Kutch is home to India’s sole wildlife reserve dedicated to the endangered Indian wild ass .The Wild Ass Sanctuary spans 5,000 kilometres and in addition to an abundant Indian wild ass population, you can see blackbucks, jackals, Indian gazelles and African lynxes roam this vast land. In the monsoons, the area of the Little Rann of Kutch transforms to a fertile wetland that sees a boom in avian species. Among them are saras cranes, Indian flamingoes, pelicans and spoonbills.

6. Polo and Vijaynagar Forests

Spread across 400 square kilometres, Polo ad Vijaynagar Forests are both scenic and historic. Once a site for an ancient city, the Harnav River flows through the dense foliage where several architectural marvels are safely tucked away. There are the ruins of Jain and Shiva temples dating back to the 15th century along with remnants of the ‘pol’ or gate signifying its status as a gateway between Gujarat and Rajasthan in the Polo ad Vijaynagar Forests.

7. Modhera

Modhera is where the famous Sun Temple is located. Built in 1026 AD during the Solanki dynasty, the main temple once housed an ornate gold chariot. Remnants of the grand complex are still evident at Surya Kund with in the four terraces descending in to this step well and the two towering ornamental arches that form the gateway to the Sabha Mandap.  The walls of the Sun Temple in Modhera are depict erotic motifs symbolic of celibacy and not sex.

8. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

​Birdwatchers are in for a real treat at Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary spanning 120 square kilomtres of a lake and marshlands. The largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat, the lake attracts over 210 species of indigenous and migratory birds. Rosy pelicans, white storks, flamingoes and herons are some of the birds that come to nest at the sanctuary. Open from 6 am to 6 pm, a boat ride is the best way to see Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary.
