Once the base camp of the flourishing Maratha Empire, the city of Pune sits on the banks of Mutha River. Considered an educational centre in the Deccan region, Pune is home to a young crowd, always on the lookout for adventurous and serene destinations to spend long weekends.

Though Maharashtra itself has plenty of vacation options, ranging from rich cultural background to diverse topography, here’s a glimpse of a few beach destinations offering the perfect weekend getaway from Pune.

1. Alibaug - Revdanda Beach Camp

A swim in the crystal clear waters of the sea lets you refresh your body and soul. The Revdanda beach camp defines unique experiences, offering a weekend escapade that allows you to watch the sun set over the horizon, while you barbecue a scrumptious dinner.

Enjoy various beach and water sports, with the azure waters in the backdrop, before you enjoy the night in front of a lively bonfire. Stargazing is something that will keep you occupied for most of the night!

How to Get There: From Pune, drive on the Mumbai-Pune expressway and take the Khopoli exit. Drive toward Pen (30 km) and cross the Mumbai-Goa highway to proceed to your destination.

Where to Stay: Revdanda Beach Camp

2. Tarkarli

Known for its beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, the small coastal village of Tarkarli is set in the Malvan region. Meeting the Arabian Sea at Devbag beach, the Karli River flows nearby. Facing the sea, Sindhudurg Fort stands tall at the edge of the village.

If you’re looking for water sports, Devbag beach, Tondavali beach and Bhogave beach won’t disappoint. During the trip, don’t miss a visit to the Laxmi Narayana temple, Tondavali beach and Bharadi Devi temple.

A range of water based activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving and dolphin spotting can be experienced.

How to Get There: Take Lal Bahadur Shastri Road to NH4 in Kudale Baug. Exit from NH4 and take the Rajya Marg 115 followed by NH17 in Humarat to Kasal. Malvan-Kasal road takes you to Tarkarli beach.

3. Dapoli

Being close to the coast, the weather in Dapoli is pleasant throughout the year, making it the perfect destination for a young crowd seeking respite from the hectic city life. Several small villages nearby attract hordes of tourists for the serene environment and untouched beaches.

Indulge in boat rides and water sports or visit the Kanakadurga and Suvarnadurg forts to catch a glimpse of the city’s heritage. Of various pristine beaches in Dapoli, the ones at Ladghar and Murud are the most popular.

Panhalekaji caves and several Ganesha temples near Dhakti and Kothai rivers are other places that should also be on your checklist.

How to Get There: Though you can take the route from Bhor, the bad road condition is better avoided. Take the Mahabaleshwar route instead. From Pune, take the NH4 Bangalore highway, and reach Mahabaleshwar via Wai. Proceed to Poladpur and take a right from Khed.

Where to Stay: Dapoli Camp

4. Daman and Diu

Located in the state of Gujarat, Daman and Diu give a glimpse of the influence of Portuguese culture on architectural marvels in India. Jampore beach, one of the few black sand beaches in India, attracts several tourists every year.

Along with Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Goa, Daman and Diu are the remnants of culture and history left behind by the Portuguese in India.

Contrary to the beaches in Goa, the serene beaches in Daman and Diu are the perfect place to relax, and appeal to tourists looking for unexplored trails.

How to Get There: The most convenient way is to take Train Number 06501 from Pune to Vapi, and take a taxi from Vapi to Daman.

Where to Stay: Near Devka beach, Cidade de Daman, Hotel Miramar

5. Ratnagiri

Bound by the Sahyadris on the East, the port city of Ratnagiri is emerging to be a famous tourist destination in the South. Home to the famous Alphonso mangoes, Ratnagiri also has several historical monuments to its credit.

Guhagar beach, Anjarle beach and Ganapatipule beach are in close proximity to the main city. Ratnadurga, also called the Bhagwati Fort, is a famous destination, built on top of a hill, surrounded by water on three sides.

There are several mausoleums and temples in the place as well. With less crowded areas, the pristine beaches of Ratnagiri will instantly take your breath away.

How to Get There: Take the Pragati Express from Pune to Mumbai, and Hapa Ten Sup Ex from Mumbai to Ratnagiri.

Where to Stay: Near Ganpatipule beach, Kohinoor Samudra Beach Resort, The MTDC Resort

6. Kashid

If your idea of a holiday is listening to the sound of waves, lying down on white sands and sipping fresh coconut water, Kashid will be the perfect choice for a weekend getaway from Pune.

Known for its paddy fields, green mountains and unexplored rivulets, Kashid is a small beach town placed along the Arabian Sea. One of the most sought after spots for surfing, kayaking and kitesurfing, this deserted town comes alive during weekends.

How to Get There: Reach Mumbai and take the left road from Alibaug at the trisection with the temple and continue on the first left. A road branches off toward the right. Take this one to reach Kashid.

Where to Stay: Kashid Beach Resort, Manan Guest House

7. Goa

Carrying a rich colonial past, Goa has always been India’s centre of global tourism. The present culture is a reflection of the multi-cultural roots in the form of synagogues, temples and churches.

For the younger crowd, Goa is a destination to go for a partying and fun-filled getaway. Whether you want a relaxing holiday (check South Goa), or a party you won’t forget (check North Goa), Goa’s beaches would satisfy the wanderlust you’ve been feeling inside.

Nightlife and water sports will keep you busy, and hungover mornings can be spent relaxing at some of the most luxurious beach resorts in India. Don’t miss the delicious Goan cuisine during your trip. Scenic beauty, wildlife, churches and temples, Goa offers everything for the perfect weekend getaway from Pune.

How to Get There: Take Goa Express from Pune to Goa. You may also take a bus, running daily between Pune and Goa.
