The whale-watching excursion in Colombo delivers exactly what it promises: a date with the majestic creatures in their natural habitat. My heart was brimming with excitement as I was going to get up close and personal with the mischievous creatures I had only seen on television or books.

The Best Spots for Whale Watching in Colombo

Among the many options available I decided to go for my whale watching adventure to Dondra Point. The excursions are available off the Southern, Eastern and Western coast of Sri Lanka.

Since whales are found in the deeper parts of the ocean, it takes a while before your boat can reach the spot where blue whales and dolphins can be spotted. The ride was long, but nowhere near boring. I spent my time enjoying the fresh sea breeze and the vast beautiful expanse of the ocean all around.

The Final Rendezvous with the Whales!

Once we reached the point where the imposing creatures are spotted, the boat huddle up and patiently wait for aquatic movement. Apparently, there is no guarantee that you will see one of these playful creatures but it certainly was my lucky day as I saw two blue whales and a cute and bouncy dolphin playing in the water.

As someone who feels strongly for the environment, one of my major concerns was to watch these creatures without being intrusive, or causing them any harm. The Rohana Coast Guard that observed whale and dolphin watching activities in Mirissa ensured that all tour operators and tourists take the pre-requisite precautions and do not cause any disturbance to the creatures.

After a fairly fulfilling trip, coming back to the golden sandy beach was another delight. I spent the remainder of my time relaxing by the sea until the sun went down. This however, was just the beginning of a mesmerizing end to the day.

I had always found whales to be fascinating creatures, but I never thought I’d get to see them so up-close in the middle of the ocean. Thanks to MakeMyTrip for making this possible for me.
