About SpiceJet Airlines

SpiceJet is a low-fare airline, with its headquarters in Gurugram, India. It has been recognized as India’s third-largest airline on the basis of number of travellers and a market share of 13.3% as on October 2017. SpiceJet operates 312 flights daily to 55 destinations including 45 Indian cities and 10 international destinations from its hubs in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Hyderabad. SpiceJet’s origin can be traced back to March 1984, when Indian industrialist S. K. Modi started a company to provide private air taxi services. On February 17, 1993 the company was renamed as MG Express. Later it underwent a technical partnership with the German carrier Lufthansa. Modiluft, the name acquired by the collaboration; provided passenger and cargo services until their operations ceased in 1996. In 2004, the company was acquired by Indian entrepreneur Ajay Singh, who re-furbished the brand as SpiceJet. The first flight of SpiceJet was operated from Delhi to Mumbai on 24th May 2005. Kalanidhi Maran acquired a stake of 37.7% through the Sun Group in the company bailing out its financial troubles in 2012 after global crude prices skyrocketed. In January 2015, shares were sold, and the control of the company was returned to Ajay Singh
