Sabarimala - One of the Oldest Temples in India

Kerala Sabarimala Temple timings

The Sabarimala Mandir is open from 3:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM.


Best Time to Visit

The Sabarimala Mandir is not open throughout the year. It is open for a few days towards the end and start of each Malayalam calendar month. In addition, it is open on a few other occasions such as Mandala Vilakku (around December 25th), Onam and so on. Makarasankrant and Makaravilakku are the most important occasions. The Mandala kalam pilgrimage to Sabarimala begins on the first day of Malayalam year's Vrischika month and finishes on the 11th day of Dhanu month. Mandala kalam refers to the 41-day pilgrimage season. The season lasts from December until January.


Dos and Don’ts at Kerala Sabarimala Temple

  • Pilgrims who want to go on a Sabarimala pilgrimage must refrain from non-vegetarian food, alcohol and cutting hair and nails, and practice celibacy for 41 days before the pilgrimage.
  • Women (10 yrs to 50 yrs) are not allowed inside the temple.
  • Sabarimala pilgrims should dress in blue or black traditional attire.
  • As a sign of devotion, all devotees must say "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" (Ayyappa is my saviour).
  • Every pilgrim going to Sabarimala carries an Irrumudi-Kettu, which is a bag holding a coconut filled with ghee, puja materials, rice, and a banana. This bag is folded in half and carried on one's head.
  • Smoking, drinking and consumption of non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited in Sabarimala.
