Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple: Discover Divine Bliss

Famous for being one of the 12 ‘jyotirlingas’ of Lord Shiva, Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple has been a prominent pilgrim site for centuries. It sits on the shore of the Arabian Sea on the western boundary of Gujarat. Believed to be the first of the 12 holy Shiva temples, it has attracted invaders and desecrators in the past. It has been built multiple times. The beautifully carved beige-brown structure that you see now, is the latest construction built in 1951. The temple garden showcases Lord Shiva’s story while an hour-long light-and-sound show in the evening talks about the temple’s past and Somnath Jyotirling’s significance.

History traces Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple to 649 BC. Legend says that Somraj (Moon God) built the first Somnath Jyotirling Temple with gold. Ravana rebuilt it in silver and Lord Krishna built it with wood. King Bhimdev had it built in stone. It was attacked and destroyed multiple times but the most famous attack in history was by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 AD. Mahmud of Ghazni plundered, looted all the wealth and destroyed the Somnath Temple Jyotirling along with the structure. Many other kings of the surrounding kingdoms have attacked the structure of Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple. Aurangzeb was the last person to destroy it in 1706.

The meals are vegetarian without onion-garlic and offer to serve all devotees of the temple. Other Gujrati cuisine that you can sample are:

Besan Laddoo – Made of roasted gram flour, this simple ghee-based sweet is served as temple food or prasad in Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple. It is dry and you can carry it home since it stays fresh for almost a month. You will get similar sweets in all sweetshops here.

Lassi, Buttermilk – Lassi is a thick drink of sweetened curd, often spiced, and topped with cream or condensed/evaporated milk. This is very filling, cools the body and provides energy. Buttermilk is a thin salted yoghurt drink often made with whey after the butter has been removed from churned curd. This is very light on the stomach and often accompanies a meal. Do try both after touring Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple.

Shev-tomato sabzi – When you are trying Gujarati/Kathiyawadi cuisine, ditch the usual ‘dhokla’, ‘jalebi’, ‘fafda’, ‘khakhra’ and try this lip-smacking preparation accompanying roti (flatbread). Shev is deep-fried gram flour vermicelli which is cooked in a tangy tomato-based gravy. You can request the restaurant to make it less hot and spicy if you prefer.

Sattvik thali – Sattvik refers to vegetarian food that does not include onion and garlic. The ‘Thali’ meal includes pulses, vegetables, rice, flatbreads, salad and buttermilk. Some restaurants may offer unlimited servings while some may offer a-la-carte. This kind of meal adds to the spiritual feeling of your pilgrimage to Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple.
