1. Is a passport required for Nepal?
A: A passport is not mandatory for Indians to travel to Nepal. However, in order to travel to Nepal, one must possess any of the following:
- For Adults - A valid Indian passport or an Election Id
- For Children - For children below the age of 18 years, the school or college ID suffices. The ID should clearly reflect the traveller’s picture, school or college name, date of birth as well as the class in which the student is studying. For Children below age 12 years, please carry the birth certificate and School ID.
2. Is Indian currency accepted in Nepal?
A: Yes, Indian currency is accepted in Nepal. You can shop with Indian currency and often in return you will get Nepalese currency (as per the exchange rate). However, the new Indian currency of 2000, 500 and 200 notes are not accepted in Nepal.
3. Which part of Kathmandu should I stay in?
A: Kathmandu has a huge range of accommodation options to meet any budget. Most properties are located centrally, primarily around the Thamel district.
4. What can I buy in Nepal?

- a) Trekking gear – Nepal offers good buys on trekking essentials which include trekking shirts, jackets, shoes, sleeping bags etc. There are many shops which sell fake products too, so one needs to be careful. Thamel in Kathmandu and Lakeside of Pokhara are the best places to buy trekking gear.
- b) Pashmina – Pashmina products are a good buy in Nepal.
- c) Stone and Bead Jewelry - Bracelets, ear-rings and many other items of jewellery made using beads and stones are popular things to buy in Nepal. Rudraksha necklaces can also be bought here. Thamel, Durbar Square, and Pashupatinath are good places to buy bead and stone jewellery.
