Accomodation denied at the last moment

The hotel denied me accomodation at the last moment. Had to spend close to 50000 inr to mitigate this situation at peak canadian winters. Instead of refunding total amount paid, i am being asked to pay penalty of 6 nights for cancellation which i never asked for.
