Exquisite location

The location is fabulous- we were in one of the Cangrego units right by the beach & loved it. That being said, our experience with the hotel wasn't 100% positive. We had arranged for a taxi from the hotel to meet us at the border, but were met first by a scammer, who greeted us by name, so we thought he was the taxi driver. He eventually made clear that he wanted us to pay him $20 per person to "help us through the border". He was a friend of the taxi driver apparently, & they were working together. We refused his help but he still grabbed our bags & disappeared with them across the border, making for a long, tension-filled saga that gave us a bad feeling about the hotel before we had even arrived. Once we did arrive, there were weird money-saving things: - only 3 towels were provided for a 4-person reservation, and no toiletries - there was no top sheet for the second bed (a pull-out for our kids), & the hotel said none was available. At our insistence they eventually found a light cotton blanket. - housekeping is an additional $20/day, which wasn't made clear in our reservation - the "coffee provided in room" turned out to be just one packet of coffee for 4 nights, and no coffee maker of any kind (the units at Maritimo el Coco are owned by individuals, so others might have coffee makers). Also, I should mention that one of the other units was robbed while we were there, & the family ended up spending a long afternoon with the police.
Beautiful location unusual hotel

This is a somewhat unusual hotel; rooms are separate little bungalows set amongst tropical greenery a short walk up from the amazing beach, while the area closest to it seems to be taken up with very expensive scattered beach houses. As it is so green, it is a given that you are going to come across insects and spiders at some point and be prepared for that. Although the rooms are well cleaned and screened they inevitably do get in and just need ushering out again occasionally. The complex is large and sporadically guarded. The area feels safe enough to walk around in at night- a very local feel, but you definitely need a torch. Unlike beaches further north you can swim safely here or watch the amazing sunsets. The hotel restaurant is a great place to hang out with its own hammocks, longers and two pools- food and drink pricey, but you do get the view. NB: hotel reception is 8am to 5pm and there is no real reception/communal area except for the restaurant. We booked one night and stayed for three. Our little cabin was well appointed with tv, wifi, two fans and AC, separate shower and toilet, 2 bunk and one small double beds, an outside seating area and use of a well appointed kitchen. The free breakfast is limited to the first cup of coffee (you pay after that) and a 'tipico' - rice and beans, egg and fried plantain- it's no good asking for anything else unless you cough up for it. Overall, a very good deal, particularly if you do some of your own cooking. Stunning beach

Lovely quiet place to relax! The trip on the white road worth it. Gorgeous beach! Cozy bungalow.
Roughing it

A little too much nature for our taste. Windows not sealed enough to keep certain insects out of the room. Staff courteous and helpful.
Had fun.

Saw turtles lay eggs, walkded to La Flor. Great little supermarket at hotel for great kitchen (everything you can think of is there: blender, expresso machine, oven, microwave, dishes, expensive stainless cookware, etc). Waiters are great and housekeeping got better each day. No complaints.
Nice Stay at Playa Coco, south of San Juan Del Sur

We were looking for a relaxing, peaceful place to say around San Juan del Sur, and we certainly found it at Parque Maritimo el Coco. We stayed in Cangreo #3, one of three connected bungalows right on the beach. Our 4 year old loved being able to go out the door and find sand dollars, hermit crabs, and shells on the beach, while we watched above from the deck. Each morning, we walked a couple of minutes on the beach to go to the hotel restaurant for breakfast - a standard rice/beans/egg/ coffee/fruit juice that was included with the room. There was also a small swimming pool next to the restaurant on the beach that our 1 year old and 4 year old enjoyed. Our bungalow was clean enough, and it was comfortable (ceiling fans, air conditioning, decent queen bed, sofa/futon, deck with table and chairs). The kitchen was equipped with a small fridge, gas stove, and pots and pans. There was wifi, though the service seemed intermittent. A small television had cable with many channels. My only complaint was that a couple times while showering, the water became quite smelly. Other than that, it was a great stay and I look forward to returning.
Missing a Few Details

This particular property has a few different options that you should be aware of. There are some units ON the beach which I've stayed in before and was pleased with. The unit I stayed in this time was quite a distance from the beach and next to a "pool"... The pool was dirty, tiny and very shallow. I'd call it a little more of a tub. Also, even though advertised there was no cable tv in the room. Just an old tv with a dvd player attached. The room was clean and comfortable otherwise, and the staff was helpful.
loved our stay!

It was a little scary driving too(only dirt roads and far from the city) but once we got there, it was gorgeous! We loved being on a semi private beach. There were turtle eggs nearby that were going to hatch soon and gorgeous food. Our bungalow was so cute and had a kitchen and hammocks nearby. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone I know!
Beach Paradise

These are bungalows located a close distance to a pristine beach about 30km south of San Juan del Sur. Our bungalow slept 4 with a private bath and shower. The bungalows are in the woods and approximately 500 m to the beach. We nearly had the huge beach to ourselves. The shared kitchen in an adjacent bungalow (shared by 2 bungalows) was well equipped. For the price although somewhat like camping this is an amazing beach option. Only complaint is the distance to the restaurant/pool/activity area which is separated from the bungalows and registration by 750m. Ohh and realize its a 30k drive on a hilly gravel road. We had a older Suziki Alto and managed it fine... There are a lot of local busses going to San Juan Del Sur often.
This not a hotel, it is a campground

The lodge is located in the outskirt of San Juan in the middle of a wildlife preserve. We got there in the middle of the night after a 2 1/2 hours drive from MGA. The place was dark and creepy. Our cabin was only 70 sqft with a shower a small vanity and a closet that could barely fit a small back. Beside the facility personnel, it appeared that we were the only guests in the compound. We check out in the morning and got us a hotel room in San Juan, across the bay. If you are looking for some primitive type of accommodation and isolation, this is the perfect place. But if you like a bit of excitement, better stay in San Juan. Round trip transportation to San Juan is $40 US.
Convenience

Great beach. Very nice people. Very convenient that you can role all costs into your hotel bill. You really do not need to carry cash. Only two critiques - one restaurant for all meals and very few toys to use on the beach.

Best Beachfront Apartment! Highly recommended!

This is the best beachfront spot we ever found! The balcony of the Apartment (Cangrejos #1) sits right on the far north end of the 1km beach with an unobstructed view of everything! That being said, there wasn't a lot of action - PERFECT! We read, cooked for ourselves, swam, collected shells, watched pelicans glide the waves, saw baby turtles, bought ice cream from the store, napped and even watched a movie on 1 of the 6 nights we stayed. We ate at the restaurant a couple times and it was nothing to rave about for a BIG price - but the view was spectacular and where else do you watch a couple players of the beach soccer game casually saunter over to the water's edge, toss in a line and pull out a couple fish during the middle of the game!? The apartment was great for the 2 of us and had a comfortable King size bed, kitchen with fridge/stove/microwave/coffeemaker/microwave, separate toilet and shower, futon, satellite TV, Wifi and Safe. The only thing we 'missed' was a broom to sweep out the sand during the day. We didn't avail ourselves of housekeeping but they did phone us each day to offer it and the linens were changed on day 3. The staff was great and you felt they were paying attention to you without being in your face. We knew the night Security was there, but we didn't see him! There were only 3 other people in the adjoining apartment for 1 of the nights we were there, so we arent sure of the noise levels when all 3 apartments are occupied, but we had NO complaints.

One thing that that it lacks is the availability of running hot water which is a must for this type of a place. Except for this our stay was almost perfect. The restaurant serve very good food except for the home made fresh bread which does not meet the standard. Service is very good. The beach is beautiful and it is worth the hardship required to get this hotel. The cottage we stayed did not have backup generators which is a must in a place where current is very unreliable. On the whole we had a very good comfortable and peaceful stay.
